1907 "1/2d" ON 5/- GEORGETOWN PROVISIONAL continued...
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
2181 og/nh S.G. #18, 18b imageS.G. #18, 18b, 1907 "1/2D" on 5/- Salmon and green, double surcharge in horizontal pair with normal, the famous bottom right corner sheet-margin example with the left stamp being the surcharge error, both stamps with especially well struck examples of the surcharge, the double surcharge overlaps but is displaced by a full millimeter from left to right, showing especially well in the "2" and the "D", attractively well centered, especially fresh with beautiful colors on bright white paper, o.g., lightly hinged on the normal surcharge, the error stamp is never hinged, very fine and exceedingly choice. All double surcharges of the Georgetown provisionals are rare. Twenty examples have been recorded of the "1/2D" on 5/- Salmon and green double surcharge. However, only four examples have been recorded in pairs with a normal surcharge. One marginal pair is found in the Royal Collection and is not available to collectors. Besides this corner margin pair, Mr. Maisel has another example offered in the next lot. The whereabouts of the fourth example is not known. The standard catalogs only list singles of the stamps and their varieties. The sum of these values is what we have listed, however in no way does this reflect the rarity or the true value of the se-tenant pairs. The corner margin pair offered here is the most striking and desirable of these rarities available to collectors; 1985 BPA certificate; ex-Marston (Scott #18, 18b; $11,400.00+). (Image) £11,250+

SOLD for $25,000.00

2182 og S.G. #18, 18b imageS.G. #18, 18b, 1907 "1/2D" on 5/- Salmon and green, double surcharge in horizontal pair with normal, the left stamp showing a clear double surcharge, being especially distinct and showing doubling of all three elements of the surcharge, displaced from top to bottom by over 1 1/2mm, extraordinarily well centered with attractive colors, o.g., lightly hinged, a couple of natural gum bends and wrinkles, very fine; one of only four examples of this overprint error in a se-tenant pair with a normal surcharge that have been recorded; only three of these are available to collectors and this pair has one of the most striking of the double surcharges; an important rarity that is not accurately reflected by the catalog value; 1945 RPS and 1995 BPA certificate; ex-Prappas (Scott #18, 18b; $11,400.00+). (Image) £11,250+

SOLD for $19,000.00

2183 O S.G. #18b imageS.G. #18b, 1907 "1/2D" on 5/- Salmon and green, double surcharge, exceedingly rare used double surcharge, showing clear and distinct doubling of the surcharge, the second surcharge being displaced to the top right by over 2mm, tied to piece by "George Town/Grand Cayman/MR 3 08" c.d.s., Type 4 pmk., tiny surface rub near the head which is of little importance considering this is the only used example with this postal cancel, very fine; the rarity of a used example with distinct double surcharge cannot be overstated, which makes it surprising that both Stanley Gibbons and Scott value the mint and used the same, certainly an important rarity for any specialized collection of the Cayman Islands; 1995 BPA certificate; ex-Meredith, Marston and Cooley (Scott #18b $11,000.00). (Image) £11,000

SOLD for $9,000.00

2190 O S.G. #19 imageS.G. #19, 1907 "1D" on 5/- Salmon and green, tied to large portion of cover front to England along with the 4p Brown and blue and 5/- Salmon and green of the 1907 issue (S.G. #13, 16), plus 1/2p Green and 1p Carmine of the 1907 "Postage & Revenue" issue (S.G. #25, 26), all tied by "George Town/Grand Cayman/AU 24 08" c.d.s., Type 4 pmk., stamps are all fresh and bright, very fine; certainly philatelic in its origin but very few postal items are known with mixed issues of the Georgetown Provisional and the other values of the 1907 issues (Scott #13, 16, 19, 21, 22). 2191 O S.G. #19 imageS.G. #19, 1907 "1D" on 5/- Salmon and green, lovely used single with large portion of a remarkably well struck "Cayman Brac/Cay(man Isl)ands/NO 22 08" double-circle c.d.s., Type 2 pmk. of Stake Bay, well centered, fresh color, very fine and choice; all used examples of the Georgetown provisionals are considerably scarcer than mint, but a huge percentage of those that were used were from Georgetown, only a handful are known used from other towns or this smaller island; 1996 BPA certificate (Scott #19; $400.00+). (Image) £290+

SOLD for $350.00

2192 O S.G. #19 imageS.G. #19, 1907 "1D" on 5/- Salmon and green, an extraordinarily rare used example with Boddentown Type 2 double-arc c.d.s., showing nearly the full "Boddentown" portion of the cancel, dated September 22, 1909, a well centered stamp with slight soiling on some perf. tips, very fine; the Boddentown post office opened at the beginning of 1909 and this c.d.s. cancel was the first handstamp cancel that came into use in July of that year, it is highly unusual for the Georgetown Provisionals to be used here, not only because most of these were used in Georgetown, but because by the time this post office opened these issues were no longer in regular use, a great cancel rarity; 1995 BPA certificate (Scott #19; $400.00+). (Image) £350+

SOLD for $400.00

2193 O S.G. #19 imageS.G. #19, 1907 "1D" on 5/- Salmon and green, horizontal strip of three fiscally used with ms. "J W Hunter" written across the strip, the stamps are well centered and fresh with strong colors, very fine; until 1908, when the new key plate issue inscribed "Postage & Revenue" came into use, government officials were required to use postage stamps inscribed "Postage/Postage", technically these were supposed to be used for postal purposes only, some believe that the high value 1907 issues were supposed to be inscribed "Revenue" and were not in error, nevertheless these postage stamps did get pressed into service and even the Georgetown provisionals saw this usage, an exceptionally nice and scarce use of this "1D'" on 5/- Salmon and Green strip (Scott #19). SOLD for $700.00

2194 c S.G. #19 imageS.G. #19, 1907 "1D" on 5/- Salmon and green, well centered single tied to cover to Kingston, Jamaica by "George Town/Grand Cayman/NO 30 07" c.d.s., Type 4 pmk., backstamped, slight edge wear, very fine and actually quite choice for this usage; the provisional surcharge pays the 1p Empire rate to Jamaica, it is exactly this type of usage that the stamps were surcharged for; this is one of nine covers known franked solely by this value and only one of two covers recorded paying the 1p Empire rate, ex-Cooley (Image) Est. 4,000-5,000

SOLD for $4,500.00
Will close during Public Auction
2195 c S.G. #19 imageS.G. #19, 1907 "1D" on 5/- Salmon and green, a similar cover to the previous with well centered single tied to cover to Kingston, Jamaica by "George Town/Grand Cayman/NO 30 07" c.d.s., Type 4 pmk., backstamped, small edge tear at right, very fine; both of these covers were sent by the same correspondent, the address being in the same hand, and actually sent to the same address but to different individuals; this is also one of nine covers known franked solely by this value and one of only two covers recorded paying the 1p Empire rate; 1994 BPA certificate; ex-"Rew" (Scott #19). (Image) Est. 4,000-5,000

SOLD for $4,000.00

2196 c S.G. #19 imageS.G. #19, 1907 "1D" on 5/- Salmon and green, single and strip of four tied to commercial cover to the United States, all neatly tied by "George Town/Grand Cayman/DE 9 07" c.d.s., Type 4 pmk., posted to the Charles E. Moody Co. in Boston, Kingston transit on the reverse, cover tear at bottom right and other edge faults, plus mounting faults on the reverse, none of which affect the stamps or their cancels, a fine and rare cover; the 5p franking pays double the foreign letter rate of 2 12/p; very few legitimate usages with the Georgetown provisionals are known, this being one of nine covers recorded with franking solely by the "1D" on Five Shilling and it is quite possibly it is one of only two or three with this usage, if that many; 1994 BPA certificate; ex-Burrus (Scott #19). (Image) Est. 7,500-10,000

2197 og S.G. #19, 19a imageS.G. #19, 19a 1907 "1D" on 5/- Salmon and green, double surcharge in horizontal pair with normal, an impressive se-tenant pair with striking appearance as the right stamp shows an exceptionally clear double surcharge, being especially distinct and showing doubling of both the "1" and the "D", displaced from left to right by over a millimeter, extraordinarily well centered with attractive radiant colors, o.g., light h.r., the left non-error stamp has a barely apparent closed tear at bottom, the all-important double surcharge is very fine and exceedingly choice; the provisional "1D" on the Five Shilling King Edward VII with double surcharge is very rare even as mint singles with only a very few examples known, however in se-tenant pairs with the normal surcharge it is a major rarity, this being one of only two examples that have been recorded, in addition this pair has one of the most distinct and striking of the double surcharges; we have quoted the sum of the error and a normal single in the catalog values, but this is an outstanding rarity that is not accurately reflected by these quotations; signed H. Bloch and accompanied by a 1978 BPA certificate (Scott #19, 19b; $16,540.00+). (Image) £18,250+

2198 nhbl S.G. #19, 19a imageS.G. #19, 19a, 1907 "1D" on 5/- Salmon and green, double surcharge, the sensational left sheet-margin block of four containing a striking double surcharge in the top left stamp, together with three normal and strongly struck surcharges in the other three positions, this block's visage is impressive with brilliant colors, extraordinarily well centered, and possessing full o.g. that is very lightly hinged in the left selvage only, stamps are never hinged despite a trace of gum soaking to a few bottom perfs. of the bottom pair, faint vertical gum crease in left pair affecting the error stamp even less, very fine and exceptionally choice. The surcharge varieties of the "1D" on Five Shilling are highlighted by two stellar and unique blocks of four. Each of them has a different variety and are both featured items in the Richard Maisel Large Gold Medal Collection of Cayman Islands. One is the plate block containing in the top left position the only known example of the "1D" Inverted Surcharge. The other is the block of four offered here, with an exceptional double surcharge in the same top left position. It is interesting that neither of these rarities were found in any of the major sales of Cayman Islands. Rather they first made their appearance in recent times in the 1995 Sale of the the Hadley collection of British Commonwealth offered by Ivy & Mader Philatelic Auctions and probably had been off the market for decades. The reason they were present in that sale was not because they were Cayman Islands or even because they were so incredibly rare, but rather because Mr. Hadley had a penchant for outstanding blocks of four. The double surcharges of the "1D" are decidedly scarcer than the analogous "1/2D" Surcharge and the census of the known items is much less exact than the latter. A very few (less than six) mint singles are known. A single postally used example is recorded, as well as a three items fiscally used. The rarest, however, are the se-tenant multiples with the normal surcharge. Of these only two mint pairs are known, plus this unique block of four. In addition to being outstanding as a block of four, it is also noteworthy for having one of the most distinct and complete impressions of the two overprints. The catalog value of the sum of the four stamps, which we have quoted, hardly does justice to the desirability and value of this great rarity. A magnificent showpiece for the most advanced Cayman Island collection, or even an outstanding British Commonwealth collection of multiples; 1995 BPA certificate; ex-Hadley (Scott #19, 19a; $17,120.00+ for hinged). (Image) for hinged £18,750+

2199 O S.G. #19a imageS.G. #19a, 1907 "1D" on 5/- Salmon and green, double surcharge, an extraordinarily rare used example of this famous surcharge error, being an attractive example with strong bright colors and well centered, bearing a sizable portion of a Georgetown Type 5 c.d.s. dated December 9, 1907 in the proper period of use of this provisional, the surcharge is also very distinctly double with a strong impression at right and a lighter but very distinct portion of a second overprint at left, showing portions of both the "1" and the "D", the two overprints being displaced by about 1 1/2mm, very fine; actually this used example should be considered the rarest of the double surcharges, as there are several examples of the mint known singly and in multiples, but this is the only recorded example of a postally used double "1D" Surcharge on the Five Shilling King Edward VII, Stanley Gibbons does not price this error used, and Scott's $7,500.00 quotation is ludicrous considering this stamp's unique status; an astounding rarity of which no award contending collection is complete without; 1997 David Brandon certificate; ex-Marston (Scott #19a; $7,500.00). (Image) Est. 15,000-20,000

SOLD for $9,000.00

2200 O S.G. #19, 19a imageS.G. #19, 19a, 1907 "1D" on 5/- Salmon and green, double surcharge, strip of three tied to piece of Customs form by purple customs circular handstamp, also cancelled by the signature of W.A. Bodden and dated "2 12 07" (December 2, 1907), the rare double surcharge is the center stamp in this strip making a wonderful se-tenant multiple, vertical crease through the error stamp, an impressive piece with extremely fine appearance; this provisional surcharge seems to have been used with some regularity for fiscal purposes, perhaps as much or more so than its postal usage, but the double surcharges of this value are overall considerably scarcer than the similar double surcharges of the "1/2D" Surcharge, the strip offered here is one of three recorded fiscally used double surcharges, one other that we are aware is a single similarly used, this is quite likely the finest and most striking of these three; used examples are not priced in Stanley Gibbons postally or fiscally; 1982 BPA certificate; ex-Green (Scott #19a).
