1907 "1D" ON 5/- GEORGETOWN PROVISIONAL continued...

2201 nhbl S.G. #19, 19b imageS.G. #19, 19b, 1907 "1D" on 5/- Salmon and green, inverted surcharge, spectacular top left corner margin plate no. 1 block of four containing the unique inverted surcharge in position 1, together with three normal surcharges, an amazing block possessing stellar features that have all come together in this great Cayman Islands rarity, featuring exceptionally well centered stamps and possessing remarkable freshness with attractive bright colors, in addition all four of the surcharges are exceptionally well struck in the appropriate position, an unusual phenomenon as many surcharges are poorly struck, full o.g. that is lightly hinged in the top margin only, all the stamps, including the error, are never hinged, very fine and exceedingly choice.An apparent shortage of 1p values on November 22, 1907 was the immediate reason for surcharging the 5/- Salmon and green with the "1D" surcharge, followed just a few days later by the "1/2D" surcharge. Despite the scandal that resulted in philatelic circles from the surcharging of stamps, only a few errors characteristic of overprints being applied by hand occurred and they all seem to be honest mistakes. In the case of the inverted overprint this single known example testifies that this was not being done to create varieties. Furthermore, by being preserved in a block of four it provides further evidence of this fact. The stamp that received the inverted impression is the first stamp on the left pane. Undoubtedly this was the first stamp to be handstamped on the sheet. Apparently the clerk had picked up the handstamp in the wrong position and applied this first impression. When he saw the error he shifted the handstamp and applied the rest correctly.A marvelous rarity of the Georgetown provisionals and of all Cayman Islands philately. Not only is this the only inverted error in a block of four but, in fact, there are no other inverted surcharges of this value recorded. This unique Inverted "1D" Surcharge on the 1907 Five Shilling is the premier rarity of the Cayman Islands, and of the entire British Commonwealth. Accompanied by a 1995 BPA certificate; ex-Hadley (Scott #19 var.). (Image) £60,000+

2202 og S.G. #19c imageS.G. #19c, 1907 "1D" on 5/- Salmon and green, dented frame variety, position L 1/6, crisp mint single of this exceptionally rare variety, rich bright colors, o.g., lightly hinged, very fine; we know from the records of the number surcharged that only eighteen stamps with this plate variety were originally surcharged with the "1D", certainly less than that are available today; 1970 BPA certificate for the surcharge stamp not noting the variety (Scott #19 var.). 2207 TC S.G. 25TC, 29TC imageS.G. #25TC, 29TC, 1907-08 1/2p and 4p King Edward VII fourth series imperforate trial color proofs, a portion of an "Appendix" sheet dated "16th Octr. 1907/Jamaica(Cayman Islands)" with six different 1/2p values and five different 4p values, plus a 1p Purple and orange De La Rue essay for the new King Edward VII key plate, the seven proofs in the first column are bi-colored in various color combinations and on different colored papers, the extract from the archive states that this was sent to the Crown Agents who largely rejected the proposed colors and wanted single color stamps, so the five trial colors in the second column are basically single colors on various colored papers, which was sent back to the Crown Agents, some toning to the archival page not affecting the proofs, all with large even margins, very fine; an extremely rare collection of Cayman Islands color proofs in their historical setting; ex-Green (Scott #21TC, 25TC). 2208 TC image1907-08 King Edward VII Imperforate "Imperium" color trials, two "Appendix" sheets, one dated "13th December 1907/Cayman Islands" with 6p Purple on yellow (for the 3p value) and 6p Purple and blue on blue (for the 10/- value, but not issued in this color combination), the second sheet dated "6th January 1908/Cayman Islands" bearing six similar 6p color trials in colors for the issued 3p, 4p, 1/-, 5/-, and 10/-, the last now in the Green and red on green differing from the December sheet, manuscript "Approved for values stated/ W. M./7. 1. 08" at bottom, a very rare group using these universal color trials but specifically designating them for the Cayman Islands, quite likely unique as such; ex-Edmondson, Marston and Cooley. 2211 S S.G.#25S-30S var., 38S va imageS.G.#25S-30S var., 38S var., 1907-08 1/2p to 10/- King Edward VII fourth series with "Specimen" overprints from the Madagascar archives, large ledger page 132 with three complete sets of specimens including the 1/4p Brown, each affixed and cancelled by large red "Postes et Telegraphes/Collection de Berne/Madagascar" circular handstamp, signed by "Le Directeur/des Postes et Telegraphes" at bottom, one 1/- value with damaged corner in separating, very fine; the U.P.U. at this time was sending strips of only three to the member nations (this explains why these specimens are scarcer than previous Edward VII issues), it was the practice of Madagascar to separate the stamps and affix them to ledger sheets; extremely rare and certainly unique as such; a wonderful addition to a specialized collection of the Cayman Islands (Scott #21S-30S var.). 2217 O S.G. #25 image S.G. #25, 1907 1/2p Green, tied to piece by extremely rare "Canceld/1.26.09/Btwn" red manuscript cancel, Type 1 of Boddentown, stamp is well centered and attractive, the piece was cut so it removes a small portion of the Boddentown abbreviation, very fine; the early history of the Boddentown post office is shrouded in mystery, it is believed that this post office was operating in late 1908 and early 1909 prior to having the first handstamp c.d.s. cancel, Type 2, during this period a red manuscript cancellation was applied, only a very few such items have been preserved, the piece offered here is a long and well known example, it was studied by Watkins with others and pronounced a genuine postal usage, not a revenue, it was illustrated and described in the 1946 A. J. Watkin auction catalog of Robson Lowe, and was also probably in the Meredith collection, Giraldi and McCann discussed this marking and illustrated this piece as an example of this cancellation in their work The Postal History of Cayman Islands, more recently it was submitted to the British Philatelic Association who declined to give an opinion, which is quite surprising given the long history and the judgment of some of the best scholars in the field; an interesting rarity of considerable historical significance; ex-Watkin (Scott #21).
