1222 TC 855TC1 image#855TC1, 3c Baseball Centennial, large die trial color proof on India, in red violet, die sunk on three-hole punched card measuring 136x178mm, a proof from the Brooks collection, an attractive die proof with bright color in this distinctive shade, Bureau handstamp on the reverse reads "Engraver's Stock Proof/Authorized by" and initialed, with "Brooks" written in pencil at the bottom, two small security punches, extremely fine; Charles A. Brooks was an engraver at the Bureau from 1938-1966, his collection, when sold by his heirs, was responsible for the majority of the few die proofs of the more modern issues that are now available to collectors (see appendix E at the end of the catalog for other Brooks die proofs); an unusually desirable die proof not only because of its appeal to the collectors of baseball related material, but also a very rare proof, probably the only known example in this color, and like the 3c Washington Inauguration, the color is similar enough to the issued color that it is possible that this proof is responsible for listings in the large die proof section as well; W.A. Roach, designer; C.A. Brooks, vignette engraver; control number 598416 (1939); 1995 PF certificate; ex-Brooks. (Image) $2,250.00

1940 FAMOUS AMERICANS
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
1226 TC 862TC1 image#862TC1, 5c Luisa May Alcott, large die trial color proof on wove paper, in dull blue, die sunk on nearly full size card measuring 149x200mm, a proof from the Eissler collection, exceptionally fresh and attractive, extremely fine; an exceptionally rare proof as very few of the Famous Americans are known in either issued colors and or trial colors, this is in a distinct dull blue color and not the issued ultramarine, this was probably identified that way by Brazer, who handled at least a portion of Eissler's collection, for all practical purposes most people would call this a regular large die proof as evidenced by the recent listing of this proof where Mr. Livingston purchased it; certainly only one known in this trial color; however this one proof is probably responsible for both listings in Scott; W.A. Roach, designer; John Eissler, vignette engraver; control number 70038; signed Brazer; ex-Eissler. (Image) $900.00

SOLD for $750.00

Roach, designer; John Eissler, vignette engraver; control number 70040; signed Brazer; ex-Eissler. (Image) $900.00

Roach, designer; M.D. Fenton, vignette engraver; control number 6225311A (1939). (Image) Est. 1,000-1,500
