1691 ng Chan #DU1 imageChan #DU1, 1911 1/2c Brown postage due, unissued value, unused, without gum, beautifully centered, brilliant orange brown color, extremely fine and exceptionally rare; in 1911 a new order was made with Waterlow for six values of postage dues with the instruction to change the color from blue to brown, the 1c and 2c values in brown arrived first and were issued, the 1/2c, 4c, 5c and 20c did not arrive until after the Manchu government had been overthrown and the Republic instituted, these four values were immediately issued with Republic of China overprints, only a very few unoverprinted stamps found their way into collectors' hands making them exceedingly elusive and seldom offered; listed but not priced in Chan, not listed in Scott but mentioned in a footnote after #J16. 1695 og Chan #DU5-6 imageChan #DU5-6, 1912 1c-2c Brown Foochow "Provisional Neutrality" overprint, a particularly fresh examples of these extremely rare unissued values, colors are bright and fresh, full clean o.g., 1c lightly hinged, 2c slightly disturbed from hinging, fine-very fine; the 1c and 2c Brown values had been placed in use just prior to the fall of the Manchu dynasty and were the current postage dues in use replacing the previous blue stamps, they were given the horizontal "Provisional Neutrality" overprints, but for some reason were not issued, both Dr. Ma and Dr. Chan consider these values to be especially rare; an exceptionally nice set of these terribly illusive values; mentioned in Scott in a footnote after #J24 but not priced. 1696 og Chan #DU7-14 imageChan #DU7-14, 1912 1/2c-30c Postage Dues with Nanking "Provisional Neutrality" overprints, unissued set cplt., eight different values being all of the values of postage dues in use at that time, the 1c and 2c were in the new brown color and the rest in the original blue, overall a very nicely centered set, colors are rich and attractive, all with o.g., some a bit dulled, h.r., slight aging around the perfs., otherwise very fine-extremely fine; the cross format of the Nanking "Provisional Neutrality" overprints is the result of taking the withdrawn Foochow issue with its horizontal overprint and applying four vertical characters reading "Republic of China", the postage dues were printed at the same time as the regular issues, but were never placed in service before all neutrality overprints were withdrawn; a most elusive set of postage dues that rarely is offered at auction; unlisted in Scott and listed but unpriced in Chan. 1700 c imageSiege of Paris microfilm carried by pigeons into Paris while under siege in 1870-71, this particular piece measures 30x50mm and has sixteen printed pages of names and addresses of people where dispatches have been delivered to addressees, this was an ingenious method of getting messages into Paris, homing pigeons were carried out of Paris on balloons, messages from unoccupied France were collected, microfilmed and attached to the pigeons that carried them back home to Paris, one pigeon could carry as many as 50,000 messages in this way, also includes four forms, one filled in but not used, on which a correspondent could answer four questions and have it microfilmed to be sent into Paris, all are fine-very fine with the microfilm being clear and intact.
