2 E imageRobert Siever (possibly in conjunction with Charles Whiting) small embossed essay in green with corners cut away, Queen's head and "Penny / Post" on either side in white, affixed to pale blue letter sheet, an excellent example of the popular embossing method which had an historical precedent dating back to 1694 with the inception of revenue stamps; only three such examples recorded, one of which is in the Victoria and Albert Museum; ex-Colonel Bates, Vallency, Beaumont, and Manzi. (Image) Est. £2,000-2,500

4 E imageCharles Whiting composite essay comprising "Harwoods Envelopes" essay in deep blue on wove paper (248 x 190 mm.), folded in the form of an entire, showing on the address side at left embossed impression of essay in green depicting Queen's head with "Paid" inscription above, both in white, and at right stamped impression of the Beaufort House "Principle Suggested" essay (no. 25) in red and black, endorsed "Specimens of embossed and common stamping - by Cylindrical Process"; a marvellous triple essay featuring completely different designs achieved by two printing processes; to the best of our knowledge one of only two recorded examples, of which this is the only flawless one; ex-Shaida and Cooley. (Image) Est. £3,000-4,000

Closed or SOLD for £3,750.00

5 Ec imageW.M. Closing..Mar-15, 08:00 AM
6 E imagePerkins, Bacon & Petch engraved essay for engine-turned background in black sunk on thick wove paper (200 x 130 mm.) showing various patterns, the central band being that actually used for the background of the line-engraved stamps; although Perkins, Bacon & Petch did not participate in the Treasury Competition, the company was uniquely placed in that it produced intricate backgrounds for banknotes as a security measure against forgery with a machine (the "Rose" engine) invented by Mr. Perkins, as well as having printed revenue stamps for Her Majesty's government for more than a decade previously; ex-Colonel Bates. (Image) Est. £400-500

Closed or SOLD for £2,000.00
Closing..Mar-15, 08:00 AM
7 P image1840 (Jan.) experimental plate proof (S.G. Spec. DP11) of ten (5 x 2) in blue on wove paper (149 x 192 mm.), the top row being five impressions of the first (rejected) die, fourth stage with "Postage One Penny" inscription, and the lower row comprised of five impressions of the accepted die of the background in darker colour with cleared space for the Queen's head, produced as a comparison of the backgrounds and one of the first trial spacings, tear at right barely impinges on design of top right stamp; according to Robson Lowe in his masterwork The British Postage Stamp, "this is one of the most beautiful and most interesting proofs...because it demonstrates the problem of the engraver and printer, and the necessity for having the background engraved first so that the portrait might be engraved with sufficient strength"; an extremely rare and exquisite proof, perhaps unique in private hands, since the example in the Seymour collection was possibly the same as that in the Adams collection, which was subsequently acquired by R.M. Phillips and donated to the National Postal Museum; ex-Major Allen and "Tes". (Image) Est. £15,000-20,000

Closed or SOLD for £22,000.00
Closing..Mar-15, 08:00 AM
8 P image1840 (Feb.) master die proof of the finished head and background (S.G. Spec. DP13) on India paper (71 x 72 mm.) mounted on sunken card (97 x 124 mm.), an exquisite example of engraving by Edward Heath, we are aware of the existence of only two such examples in private hands; ex-Shaida. (Image) Est. £20,000-30,000

Closed or SOLD for £21,000.00
Closing..Mar-15, 08:00 AM
9 P image1840 (Mar.) master die proof of the completed 1d. in black with the four corner squares blank (S.G. Spec. DP17a) on India paper (62 x 68 mm.) mounted on card, extremely fine and remarkable; irrefutably one of the most important pieces of philatelic artwork in existence, this being the master for the world's first postage stamp, only two (according to the most recent edition of the S.G. Specialised) or three examples recorded in private hands, of which the Meroni example was cut down to stamp size and the Earl of Crawford example has faults, while the example offered here is in exceptional condition; three other examples are in institutional collections - two are in the Royal Collection (one has minor differences due to subsequent work by the engraver) and the other in the National Postal Museum; ex-Major Allen and "Tes". (Image) Est. £40,000-50,000

Closed or SOLD for £47,500.00
Closing..Mar-15, 08:00 AM
10 P image1840 (Mar.) completed die proof of the 1d. black with corner stars added, the exceedingly rare and extraordinary reversed impression (S.G. Spec. DP17c) on thin bluish wove paper (134 x 85 mm.), dramatically overinked, pulled from a flat plate showing vertical guide lines outside design with part etching in the margin "Deposit... / Bank of British...", the usual minor irregularities associated with a working proof; a most curious and elusive piece of artwork produced prior to the transfer of the impressions to the full plate, possibly to verify the alignment on the transfer roller; only one other example recorded, which to the contrary is strikingly underinked; ex-Earl of Crawford. (Image) Est. £15,000-20,000

Closed or SOLD for £12,000.00
Closing..Mar-15, 08:00 AM
