1851-1856 Issues
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
8 O 5 image#5, 1c Blue, Ty. I, position 7R1E, exceptionally well margined, with uniformly large margins on three sides, fourth margin at bottom just touching extreme lower portions of plumes and scrolls, sumptuously rich color and a highly detailed impression on bright fresh paper, beautifully postmarked with an unobtrusive circular grid in deep blue, plus there is a portion of a black cancel at top which is likely to be part of a French decimes handstamp, few small thin spots which have been expertly filled, otherwise very fine. An especially handsome appearing example of one of the rarest and most sought-after classic United States stamps. One position, the legendary position 7R1E, provides the philatelic world with the only full Type I design as originally intended, a characteristic no other One Cent imperforate displays. Less than 100 examples of this rarity exist, virtually all of which are used. Very few are found with the overall eye-appealing qualities that this stamp possesses - wide margins allowing for easy identification of the Ty. I characteristics, strong rich color, excellent clarity of impression and neatly cancelled so that no portion of the postmarks obscure the important design factors. A large number of the recorded examples of Scott #5 have faults ranging from rather minor to severe. The thin spots on this stamp are quite small and none affect its overall exceptional appearance. These trivial thins have been so expertly filled that they have, in fact, been overlooked in most past auction descriptions. Accompanied by a 1988 PF certificate. (Image) 45,500.00

SOLD for $37,500.00
Closing..May-31, 03:30 PM
9 ng 5A image#5A, 1c Blue, Ty. Ib, positions 4-5R1E, an enormously rare unused horizontal pair, regummed, featuring very large margins both at top (partial sheet margin) and at bottom, left margin just cutting, while margin at right is close but clear, brilliantly fresh and vibrant color, outstanding impressions showing the Ty. Ib design characteristics exceedingly well, left stamp with tiny thin spot, right stamp with spot at top, a corner crease at top right (in sheet margin only) and an internal horizontal crease/wrinkle at right, none of which affect this pair's very fine and appealing appearance; an important One Cent Blue imperforate multiple, as very few Ty. Ib multiples exist unused in any condition; 1999 PSE certificate. (Image) 30,000.00

SOLD for $10,000.00
Closing..May-31, 03:30 PM
10 O 5A image#5A, 1c Blue, Ty. Ib, position 6R1E, four large to mostly enormous margins, showing portions of the adjoining stamps on three sides, just a bit closer at top right, distinctive "powder blue" color typical of the plate one early printings, although this stamp's color is stronger than usual, detailed impression showing the Type Ib design characteristics wonderfully well, neat and crisply struck New York town c.d.s., extremely fine; a marvelously choice used example of the One Cent Blue imperforate stamp from one of the positions that produced the best examples of the Type Ib design; 1986 and 1992 PF certificates; ex-Handy. (Image) 9,500.00

SOLD for $9,000.00
Closing..May-31, 03:30 PM
11 ng 6 image#6, 1c Blue, Ty. Ia, position 92R4, an immensely rare unused example, possessing margins that range from large to just cutting (although not objectionably and is actually quite well balanced), deep luxuriant color and a strong detailed impression, sound, with trace of o.g. (cataloged as a no gum example), fine; one of the most elusive stamps in United States philately to find unused, particularly sound and certified; 1997 PF certificate. (Image) 19,000.00

SOLD for $8,000.00
Closing..May-31, 03:30 PM
12 O 6 image#6, 1c Blue, Ty. Ia, position 96L4, a lovely used example of this important classic rarity, featuring mostly large margins all around, just barely touching at bottom left, gorgeous intense Plate 4 color and an incredibly detailed impression which is wonderfully contrasted by its bright white paper, only very lightly cancelled by a black town c.d.s. and a trace of a red postmark at bottom left, very fine and exceptionally choice for this; the extreme rarity of Type Ia stamps is due to the fact that only 18 of the 20 positions on the bottom row of plate 4 sheets (200 subjects) produced this distinctive type, which shows a full design at bottom; 1984 PF certificate. (Image) 10,000.00

SOLD for $7,250.00
Closing..May-31, 03:30 PM
