1392 c imageDavis-Stephens 7-Star Confederate Flag Patriotic design covers, five unused examples, most with a different arrangement of embossed stars in the blue field, covers also show different fonts with one misspelling Stephens (Stevens), another is docketed in manuscript with political commentary "Flag of the South; or, the Traitors Ultimatum. Sic transit! Gloria Viri!!!", on reverse is written "Presented by R.W. Lansing, May 10th 1861, Inperpetuam Memoriam", four of the covers probably of Union manufacture, one docketed to be of Southern origin, light back erosion and trivial folds to a couple, otherwise extremely fine; a very select grouping for the Confederate patriotic collector. (probably Augusta Ga. early 1861) on red and blue embossed advertising 7-Star Confederate Flag Patriotic cover, "Stovall's Excelsior Flour Mills, Thos. M. Stovall, Augusta, Ga." imprint to right on white portion of flag design, addressed to Mr. C.H. Johnson, Griffin, Ga., blue printed Jas. L. Gow manufacturing imprint at bottom left, tiny sealed tear at top, a couple of flap faults not affecting stamp, very fine for this; all-over design flag patriotics are rare, however embossed advertising patriotics such as this one are in a unique class to themselves; ex-Van Dyk and MacBride. 1397 c 26 image#26, 3c Dull red, one vertical pair, one single, pair has straight edge right and is folded over to back, tied by enclosed grid cancels to red and blue Davis-Stephens 7-Star Confederate Flag Patriotic cover addressed to Paymaster John V.B. Bleecker, U.S. Navy Yard, Portsmouth, N.H., red "Charlestown MS/Jun (?) 1861" c.d.s. strike at top (on red & blue flag background, visible from inside cover), this Massachusetts cancel would seem to indicate Northern use of a Confederate Patriotic shortly after termination of postal relations, small closed tear upper left, otherwise extremely fine and exceedingly choice; a very rare usage of U.S. stamps on a Confederate Patriotic.
