26 O 12 image#12, 5c Red brown, a most remarkable used example of this classic stamp, possessing numerous exceptional physical characteristics which contribute to its tremendous overall eye appeal, boasting extravagantly large margins all around, but even more impressive is this stamp's incredibly deep rich color and highly detailed impression on the brightest and freshest paper we have seen, all wonderfully postmarked with a very light and unobtrusive town c.d.s., truly superb; while nice used #12's can be found, few can compare to the overall beauty of this gem example; 1999 PF certificate. 28 Obl 12 image#12, 5c Red brown, an enormously rare used block of four, ample to full margins all around, except projections on two sides of the top right stamp are just slightly cut into, deep rich color and strong impressions, each stamp with central grid postmarks which have been slightly lightened, bottom left stamp with tiny hole, fine overall.Very few multiples of the Five Cent 1856 Issue are known larger than strips of three (nine in all). However, it is interesting to note that there may indeed be more unused blocks, and blocks on cover, than those off cover. As our research indicates that there are two known unused blocks of four, one block of six on cover, one block of five on cover (one stamp removed from a block of six), and two blocks of four on cover. The off cover blocks known to us are limited only to this block, and two other blocks which were cut from the famous Filstrip block of eleven, which at one time was the largest surviving multiple. However, the two blocks from this multiple were cancelled with less desirable manuscript cancels. Therefore, the block offered here is the only recorded only off cover example that has been cancelled with a non-manuscript postmark. Even the legendary Caspary collection, which was brimming with incredible classic used multiples, did not have a single example of a multiple larger than a strip of three. This block is being offered for the first time in many years. An important exhibition piece for an award-winning exhibit of classic United States imperforates. (Image) 45,000.00

Brookman's The United States Postage Stamps of the 19th Century, Volume I (figure 275, page 175). (Image) Est. 750-1,000

37 c 17a image#17a, 12c Black, diagonal half used as 6c, upper right diagonal half with ample margins on both sides, magnificently tied to an August 1853 blue folded letter from San Francisco to New York by superb strike of bold two line "STEAM/SHIP" handstamp, manuscript "Via Nicaragua" at bottom left, very fine; the rate at this time for mail going coast to coast was 6c, however due to a shortage of 3c stamps in San Francisco, its Postmaster allowed the use of bisected 12c stamps, and the routing through the Nicaragua route was being promoted at this time as a time saving alternative to mail carried overland; a stunning bisected Twelve Cent "Via Nicaragua" cover which has been off the market for years; illustrated in Lester G. Brookman's masterwork The Postage Stamps of the 19th Century, Volume I (figure 277, page 178); signed Stanley B. Ashbrook. (Image) Est. 4,000-5,000

40 O 19 image#19, 1c Blue, Ty. Ia, position 92L4, a phenomenal quality used example of this rare type, possessing centering about as perfect as is possible considering how tightly spaced these stamps were positioned on the plates, spectacular color that is in the most intense shade we have ever seen on this stamp, plus its impression is wonderfully detailed allowing for all of the important type characteristics to show perfectly, brilliantly fresh and immaculate paper, fully intact perforations all around, very light and neat Chicago town postmark, an extremely fine gem. The rarity of this stamp is due to the limited number of positions on the sheet which yielded Type Ia stamps. Only 18 of the 20 bottom row positions from plate 4 contain stamps with the complete design (Type Ia). Further contributing to this stamp's rarity is the fact these are typically encountered with their perforations cutting well into the design at top and bottom, so that many Type Ia stamps are impossible to identify with certainty. That is why examples which have margins of sufficient size for all of the design characteristics to show are so highly prized by collectors. An enormously rare and eye-appealing stamp in this premium condition. In fact, we believe this particular stamp to be among the top five used Scott #19's in existence and we are aware of no other which possesses color and impression quite like this one; 2001 PF certificate.
