183 c 26 #26, 3c Brownish carmine, tied by blue "Saint Joseph, Mo./May 21, 1860" datestamp to buff cover to De Kalb, Ill., with oval "The Central Overland California & Pikes Peak Express Company/May 21/Denver City K.T." handstamp, stamp with portion of left center torn away prior to affixing to the cover, otherwise very fine; the original contents accompany, being a letter from a rancher to his father, datelined at "Rocky Mountain May 20, 1860" and starts "I am now located on a ranch fifteen miles from Denver....the roads are lined with teams coming into the mountains, some are already turning back....business is very brisk in the mines....more good mines discovered since Feb. than there was known before.... last week there was a load struck in the twelve mile diggins (sic)....the gold is plainly visable (sic) in the quartz, a handful of dirt rubbed in the palm of the hand then blown out leaves gold plainly visable (sic)," going on to discuss the trading of a horse for a mule and the price of commodities; a fascinating historical piece.
