IV Surcharge on square of white paper, imperforate, used as are all known examples, tied to piece by nearly full 26 July 97 c.d.s., well centered with large margin at top, attractive and very fine; a great 1897 provisional rarity; the two 1897 provisional surcharged values were normally printed on sheets of stamps and their margins as listed in both Scott and Yvert, but in addition five imperforate blank pieces of white paper were also overprinted with only the "5" and "50c." surcharge in two different types not distinguishing how many of each type; the example offered here is one of two produced in Ty. IV that we are aware and at most only three examples could possibly exist; certainly this presents an opportunity to obtain this incredibly rare stamp that may not be offered again for years; signed R. Calves and Roumet (unlisted in Scott). (Image) €18,000
