543 c 117L1 image#117L1, Pomeroy's Letter Express, 5c Black on yellow surface colored wove paper, two singles on folded letter each with central manuscript initials "WER" but "ties" as the ms. ink tones the inside of the letter sheet, docketed from Schenectady, New York on July 23rd, 1844 to New York city (last name of address inked out), stamps with full large to extra large margins with slightly oxidized color as is often the case, both stamps have light creases and a closed 7mm tear at bottom of right stamp, still a fine and rare double rate cover; this express letter service operated between Buffalo, N.Y. and New York City via Rochester, Syracuse, Rome, Utica, Schenectady and Albany with mail stops at each of these cities, it is not clear what factor required multiple rates (probably weight) but such usages are decidedly rarer than the normal single franking; 2013 PF certificate. Harris" of the War Dept., Harris was commissioner of Indian Affairs at this time, docketing on the reverse establishes that this was a letter (not present) of Robert E. Lee, acknowledging receipt of powers of attorney, a handsome cover and very fine; an excellent autograph of the one to become the most famous Confederate States General. (Image) Est. $1,500-2,000
