1103 c SG #39 ImageS.G. #39, 1856 1a Brown, tied by "239" cancellation of Dugshai to cover to Scotland, endorsed at top by sender Lance Corporal William Cobden of the 92nd Highlanders and duly countersigned by the commanding officer at lower left to insure the concessionary rate, three July 1860 backstamps, very fine; this letter overpays the 8p (1d) concessionary rate from India to the U.K., the 1a stamp was the lowest value available to the Lance Corporal, the 8p stamps were issued in May of 1860, but apparently had not reached Dugshai yet, given the choice of using the 1a and overpaying by 4p (½d) or sending the letter postage due, which would cost a full 1d more, the Lance Corporal overpaid, but saved the recipient ½d; 2001 Sismondo certificate. (Image) Est. $200-300

SOLD for $120.00
Will close during Public Auction
1104 c SG #44 ImageGreat Britain S.G. #44, 1858 1d Lake-red, tied by "Liverpool/3 No 62" duplex to cover addressed to "Private Tayakerly, Detachment of H.M. 57th Regiment Light Infantry, Allahabad or elsewhere, India," arriving with red "Bombay, De 16, 62" backstamp, manuscript "George Tayakerly Died 28th February 1862" notation and probably returned to England, top flap missing, otherwise fine; ex-Sattin. (Image) Est. $300-400

SOLD for $210.00
Will close during Public Auction
1106 c   Image9p Vermilion Soldier's and Seamen's postal stationery envelope to England cancelled by bold "N" in grid cancel, Jubblepore origin backstamp, Bombay transit backstamp with boxed "Too Late" and Ashford receiving backstamp, neat "Southampton Ship Letter/Mr 21, 81" entry postmark, very fine; with the closing of the Southampton route in 1880 the increased soldier's rate via Brindisi caused an uproar among soldiers who complained about the higher rate, accordingly arrangements were made with the P & O line so that soldiers could still send letters at the 9p rate via P & O non-contract steamers, there was no regular service, so letters were sent this way only when a non-contract steamer was available at Bombay, letters travelling at this lower rate were postmarked with the Southampton ship letter datestamp to indicate they had traveled via this route; ex-Sattin. (Image) Est. $150-200

SOLD for $210.00

1107 c SG #52, 63 ImageS.G. #52, 63, 1860 8p Purple and 1865 2a Brown-orange, singles of each tied by "Peshawar/Jun 23, 76" duplex postmark to cover to England with full military etiquette, ms. "Via Brindisi" directive, Umballa, Bombay and Nottingham backstamps, portion of backflap and top left corner missing, a fine example of this very rare rate; in 1872 the Italians extended their railway from the French border to Brindisi via the Mont Cenis tunnel, effective from April 1874 the P & O used it for letters marked "Via Brindisi" as a faster route to connect their mail lines to India and the Far East, regulations stated soldiers had to prepay any foreign postage on letters carried across a foreign country in addition to their privilege postage, the Italian charge in 1876 as 3d, making the soldier's letter rate 4d, or 2a9p in Indian currency, the 8p postage stamps were sold for 9p from April 1874 until new 9p stamps arrived. (Image) Est. $300-400

SOLD for $190.00
