D.C./Sep 10, 98" duplex postmark to cover to Presidio, Cal., postmark repeated at left, "New York, N.Y./Sep 23, 1898" wavy line machine backstamp, "San Francisco, Cal/Sep 29" transit and Presidio receiver, very fine; 1992 PF certificate; ex-Gallagher.This cover shows military mail carried via the military and civilian postal systems using the Coamo provisional stamp, it was sent by Capt. R. Potts, U.S. Artillery. The 5c paid only for carriage from Coamo to Ponce and another 2c should have been paid or collected, but the Ponce postal clerk was careless or kind to a fellow soldier. While about 500 stamps were printed there are only four recorded covers, however on two of these covers the stamps are uncancelled as postal workers seemed to feel they did not require it, therefore this is one of only two Coamo Provisional covers tied by a postmark. One of the true treasures of Puerto Rican philately. (Image) $32,500.00
