Since its discovery by an eight year old in Elizabeth, N.J. over 47 years ago, this remains the only example ever found. The young boy, while sorting a mixture of stamps, noticed something was amiss with the black "center" of the stamp. The boy and his mother sought out the expert opinions of a couple of stamp dealers at the time, Vincent LaBar and the famous Herman Herst. What was inexplicable to all who examined the stamp is how such an error could occur. Of course, inverted centers can always be a possibility when two colors are printed separately, but typically the inverted center would then be mis-positioned on the stamp. And yet the inverted black printing (the dam) remains in the same position of the normally printed vignette. The stamp was submitted to the Royal Philatelic Society in 1960 and was put through a battery of tests, including being examined by the printers at Thomas De La Rue. All who examined the stamp are unanimous in their opinions that the stamp is genuine, but none can solve the mystery of the placement of the vignette. The famous international collector, the Ameer of Bahawalpur, purchased this stunning stamp from the young collector who discovered it, reportedly for $10,000.00, an enormous amount at the time. Later, Mr. Cunliffe acquired the stamp for his now legendary collection. An absolutely essential stamp for any number of serious philatelists - whether it be for the finest collection of inverted centers of the world, for the British Africa specialist or simply for the collector who seeks out stamps of extraordinary rarity and notoriety. Accompanied by the original 1960 RPS certificate (S.G. #167a; £25,000).In our opinion, given this stamp's unique status and importance, we firmly believe that the catalog values quoted in both Scott and Stanley Gibbons are terribly conservative and bear little relationship to its true value. There are many rare stamps in the British Commonwealth which catalog for considerably more and yet there are many more examples known. It will be fascinating to see what new value will be quoted in both Scott and Stanley Gibbons once the hammer falls on this exciting stamp. (Image) $25,000.00

inscription inverted but properly placed in the design, light unobtrusive#108b, 1954 30c Owen Falls Dam, Vignette (dam) Inverted, watermark inverted as well, an exceptionally attractive used example of this spectacular error showing the dam and inscription inverted but properly placed in the design, light unobtrusive cancellation which does not obscure the error, well centered, strong colors, just a couple of trivial paper creases of no importance (as found on all existing examples), still very fine.Only three examples are recorded of this famous rarity (despite the Stanley Gibbons catalog stating there are only two). The example offered here from the Cunliffe collection was the first to be discovered in 1983 (nearly thirty years after its issuance) by a collector in the United States who found it in a stockbook among his duplicates. A second example was found in 1992 in a glassine containing common stamps and was auctioned in 1993 by Christies (described also as slight creasing). The third example, which we had the pleasure of selling in our September 2002 sale of the Peter Balner Collection of Inverted Centers of the World, was discovered in a mixture of common stamps in 1996 (and it too had a slight crease). The Balner example realized $14,850.00 (including the buyer's premium) against a then catalog value of $11,000.00 (£11,000 in Stanley Gibbons). Given the existence of both the 5c and 30c stamps from this series with the dam inverted, and yet in the appropriate position for a normal vignette, it is now thought that only one position in the sheet of 100 contained the inverted vignette. One of the great modern rarities of the world. Accompanied by a 1984 APS certificate (S.G. #171a; £17,000). (Image) $16,000.00
