20314 Mi. 4 image1872 (Jan 1) double rate entire to St Etienne, France franked two Brustschild 1Gr., the right hand stamp slight faults at right due to placement, the first day of issue, tied Metz cds paying the internal postage plus the 25c surcharge levied by the French during this time for mail from the Alsace, this '25' surcharge made clear by a fine blue handstamp additionally tying one stamp. One of the five recorded German/French mixed franking with first day usage, only this example has two 1Gr. Furthurmore One of only three known First Day multiple frankings of the Brustschild issue, J Hennies Cert (1979) and Guido Brugger Cert (2006) "Die wenigen Auslandsbriefe gehören zu den interessantesten Ersttagsverwendungen - bedeutende Brustschilde - Stempelseitenheit" Ex "Sommer" and "Oldenburg". 1872, Lettre en "double port franco-allemand" de Metz (Alsace Lorraine) pour St Etienne, affranchissement à deux 1 groschen avec timbre Brustschild Mi-Nr. 4 oblitéré "Metz 1.1.72 " du 1er jour d'émission des timbres allemands correspondant au port en territoire allemand, puis taxe 25c en bleu apposée à Paris pour la partie française (correspondant au tarif intérieur du 1er septembre 1871). 5 lettres connues en port mixte oblitérées du premier jour d'émission et seulement 3 avec la taxe française, la seule pièce avec deux 1Gr, une majeure de l'histoire postale de la guerre de 1870.
