3142 image1869: 25 b. orange & blue and 15 b. red, two fine and fresh examples with large margins, used on 1869 cover from Ismail to Syra, the adhesives cancelled by ISMAIL datestamp (April 21) in black (Kiriac fig. 401), framed PD alongside, reverse with GALATI transit datestamps. Upon arrival the cover was charged with'20' lepta in red crayon, bearing on top of the PD a Large Hermes Head 20 l. blue, touched on two sides, tied by SYROS cds (April 20, julian). Minor toning, nevertheless a very early usage of the Prince Carol international issue which came into use at the beginning of April 1869, the cover made its journey with high probability via Vienna not via Constantinople. Framed "P.D." at right in blue and reverse with faint Braila arrival in black. Scarce: illustrated as fig. 2 in the London Philatelist article. Ex collection Sassower.rnrnNote: The "Cu Vaporu" or "Pr. Vapora" endorsements are only ever seen on mail from Calafat to Braila - carried at 10 bani internal single rate down the Danube. See the article by Gabby Sassower in the "London Philatelist" of July-August 1978 (Volume 87, 1027-1028) which is enclosed with the lot, where he proves this cover was carried by a DDSG steamer.
