Lot Sym. Lot Description
1482 ogbl ImageCHINA, 1897, 3c Chrome Yellow, Second Shanghai Printing (18n; Chan 24S). Block of four, original gum, two h.r.'s, vibrant color on fresh paper

FINE. AN EXCEPTIONALLY RARE UNUSED MULTIPLE OF THE 3-CANDAREEN FROM THE SECOND SHANGHAI PRINTING. ONLY A SMALL HANDFUL OF MULTIPLES ARE THOUGHT TO EXIST.

In March 1896, an Imperial Edict decided that on Jan. 1, 1897, the currency was to be changed to the dollar. By that time, stocks of the current issue (Nos. 16-24) were running low and the next issue, Nos. 86-97 were unable to be printed in time. Therefore a decision was made to reprint the Dowager set by creating new stones from the original transfer. These new printings were surcharged to prepare for the currency change. Small quantities of the unsurcharged sheets reached the public from which this block originated (Image)

VERY FINE EXAMPLE OF THE RARE 1897 10-CENTS ON 12-CANDAREEN LARGE DOWAGER SURCHARGE. THIS IS THE ONLY EXAMPLE USED IN SHANGHAI WE HAVE ENCOUNTERED.

Virtually all examples we have seen bear either Ningpo or Swatow cancels. Frumkin records one example with a blue Peking cancel as well. This is the only example from Shanghai he is aware of. Accompanied by a Scott No. 54 for reference.

With 2019 Frumkin certificate. Scott Retail with no premium for cancel (Image)

FINE-VERY FINE. A FASCINATING CHINA I.C.P. AND C.I.P. COMBINATION COVER USED THROUGH THE JAPANESE POST OFFICE TO THE UNITED STATES -- WITH 10-CENTS DUE FOR RE-USE OF STAMPS.

Due to the watchful eyes of a dedicated postal employee, this cover was charged the full postage upon arrival. With close observation, the China 2c was previously affixed (see bottom perfs) to another cover. This is the only explanation as to why this accurately paid cover was charged postage due. (Image)
