FINE APPEARING AND EXCEEDINGLY RARE USE OF THE 5-CENT MEMPHIS POSTMASTER'S PROVISIONAL ON THIS 12-STAR CONFEDERATE FLAG PATRIOTIC COVER.

The "M" in the flag denotes Missouri as the 12th state, after the state's Confederate-aligned government was admitted to the Confederacy.

VERY FINE. ONLY TWELVE EXAMPLES OF THE CELEBRATED HANGING LINCOLN ENVELOPE ARE RECORDED. THIS IS THE ONLY EXAMPLE WITH A SOUTHERN POSTMASTER'S PROVISIONAL STAMP. ONE OF THE MOST CELEBRATED AND OUTSTANDING OF ALL CIVIL WAR ERA COVERS.

The Hanging Lincoln design is widely recognized as the most distinctive of all Civil War patriotics. In this extraordinary cartoon, President Lincoln is hanging upside down from a tree limb, with his symbolic axe and fence rail tied around his neck. The caption reads "Abe Lincoln the destroyer. He once split Rails. Now he has split the Union." To the left and right is the caption "The penalty of disregarding the constitution. Impeached, deposed, Tried and convicted" (there is a spelling correction from "diposed" to "deposed"). Standing beside Lincoln is a mustachioed Winfield Scott, labeled "Old Fuss n Feathers", dropping his sword and exclaiming "My glory is gone for ever." On the ground is the Union flag, captioned "The stars and stripes lie in the dust, Never to rise." A star at left has the caption "The southern star is rising" and the Confederate 11-Star flag towers above with the caption "The stars and bars shall for ever wave triumphant." Along the bottom is the imprint "Copyright claimed. HM & WC Box 417 Nashville Tenn." Despite continuing investigation, we have been unable to uncover the identify of the publishers "HM & WC."

There are currently twelve recorded examples of the Hanging Lincoln cartoon envelope, all used within the Confederacy. This is the only one with a Postmaster's Provisional paying postage. The twelve genuine examples are (listed in date order): 1) Jul. 25, 1861, Marshall Tex. "Paid X", ex Hall (Siegel Sale 840, lot 27); 4) Nov. 2, 1861, Bowling Green Ky., ex Dr. Green, Schwartz (Siegel Sale 981, lot 4154); 5) Jan. 1, 1862, Nashville Ten., 5c Olive Green (Siegel Sale 933, lot 978), offered as lot 1652 in this sale; 6) Jan. 4, 1862, Nashville Ten., 5c Olive Green; 7) Feb. 20, 1862, Cumberland Gap Ten., manuscript Paid 5, ex Boshwit (Siegel Sale 940, lot 462); 8) Apr. 15, 1862, Cartersville Miss., manuscript Due 5, ex Dr. Brandon (Siegel Sale 1087, lot 110); 9) Apr. 15, 1862, Camden Miss., 10c Rose, to Mrs. Mary Burns, Oso Tex., Kilbourne Part One (Siegel Sale 1186, lot 709); 10) Jun. 24, 1862, Camden Miss., 10c Rose, to Mrs. Mary Burns, Oso Tex., same correspondence as No. 9 (Siegel Sale 1063, lot 2208); 11) date unknown to West Union S.C., manuscript Due 5; and 12) privately carried and not postally used. EXTREMELY FINE. A REMARKABLE DUAL ADVERTISING AND 11-STAR CONFEDERATE FLAG PATRIOTIC COVER, USED WITH A SUPERB PAIR OF THE NEW ORLEANS 5-CENT PROVISIONAL.

We are aware of ten or fewer patriotic covers with the 5c New Orleans provisional stamp, including red and blue Flag and Cannon designs and the unique "Soldier" design in black (offered in Kilbourne Part One, Sale 1186, lot 554). The 11-Star Confederate flag surprinted on the back of this advertising cover is a distinctive design with an unusual pattern of stars. It also exists in an earlier form (F10-16) with ten stars (the eleventh was added to the center). Very few examples are known.

We are aware of ten or fewer patriotic covers with the 5c New Orleans provisional stamp, including red and blue Flag and Cannon designs and the unique "Soldier" design in black (offered in Kilbourne Part One). The 11-Star Flag on this cover is a modification of an earlier 10-Star design (F10-16), with the center star added. The predecessor 10-Star design is also known used with a New Orleans 5c Provisional from the same writer (ex D.K. collection, Siegel Sale 1022, lot 1091).

We are aware of approximately ten or fewer patriotic covers with the 5c New Orleans provisional stamp, including red and blue Flags, this Cannon design and the unique "Soldier" design in black, offered as lot 554 in Kilbourne Part One (Sale 1186).

EXTREMELY FINE. PROBABLY THE MOST IMPORTANT FLORIDA CONFEDERATE PATRIOTIC COVER IN EXISTENCE. ONLY FIVE EXAMPLES OF THE PENSACOLA POSTMASTER'S PROVISIONAL ARE RECORDED IN THE BRIGGS CENSUS -- THIS IS THE ONLY KNOWN USE ON A PATRIOTIC COVER AND THE ONLY RE-RATED EXAMPLE. A PHENOMENAL EXHIBITION ITEM.

The Union Pensacola postmaster when the U.S. Post Office closed the office was Thomas E. Jordan. He was subsequently commissioned the Confederate postmaster from June 10, 1861. The significance of the "H" inside the star is unknown. Of the five examples recorded in the census maintained by Dr. Dean R. Briggs, this is the only one on a Patriotic cover and the only re-rated to 10c for the over-500 mile rate.

This rare Georgia design is listed in the C.S.A. Catalog as known used only on the Savannah Postmaster's Provisional entire. We have not offered another example in our auctions. This was acquired by the Kilbournes privately in 1967 for $750.
