1407 c Image10c Blue-Black, Frameline (10 var). Position 75, three complete framelines, partially complete at left, very distinctive Black color, tied by "Richmond Va. May 13, 1863" circular datestamp on cover to Greenville C.H. S.C., some cover aging and mended tears, stamp with some faint toning around edges, Very Fine appearance, an extremely unusual stamp, Stanley B. Ashbrook wrote in 1938 (copy of letter included) that he believed the color was a changeling from the normal Blue, yet despite his examination of many hundreds of Frameline stamps, this was the first he had ever encountered which had changed so dramatically to Black, we tend to agree with his analysis as a glass will show faint traces of Blue in the corners of the top frame line, ex Haas and Dr. Warren, with 1996 C.S.A. certificate as "Blue-Black", Scott Retail $3,250.00 as normal (Image)

1408 c Image10c Blue, Frameline (10). Position 5, full top frameline, right side mostly complete and about half of left frameline visible, full margins all around, tied by "Gainesville Ala." circular datestamp on green cover with oval "For Land and Life, Children and Wife" Standing Soldier and 11-Star Confederate Flag Patriotic design (SN-4), addressed to Eutaw Ala., repaired opening nicks at top left, light folds and faint toning

A FINE AND SPECTACULAR COVER. THE FRAMELINE STAMP IS EXTREMELY RARE ON A PATRIOTIC COVER OF ANY DESIGN -- THIS STANDING SOLDIER DESIGN IS A RARITY IN ITS OWN RIGHT.

The uniformed officer in this design resembles General P. G. T. Beauregard (as does SN-5). Among the designs depicting a detailed officer likeness, only MS-1 is actually labeled with Beauregard's name.

Illustrated in 1986 Dietz catalog (p. 136). Ex Brooks, MacBride and Meroni. Scott Retail $10,000.00 (Image)

Mazange & Co., Importers and Dealers of Hardware and Cutlery" design, depicting their building at the corner of Commerce and Exchange Streets in Mobile, addressed to Camden Ala., Wm. Murphy New York imprint at bottom and on flap, slightly reduced at right
