The Kilbourne Collection of CSA Stamps and Postal History, Part 2 continued...

10¢ Blue Frameline Engraved
Lot Sym. Lot Description
1389 ngbl Image10c Blue, Frameline (10). Block of four, unused (no gum), huge margins to just in at top right including part of adjoining stamp at top left, showing virtually complete framelines on two sides and the "+" framelines at center, top left stamp some thinning, bottom right stamp very light stain in upper right margin

FINE-VERY FINE APPEARANCE. THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED BLOCK OF THE CONFEDERATE STATES 10-CENT FRAMELINE ISSUE. A RARITY OF THE HIGHEST ORDER.

The most important characteristic of Scott 10 is the frameline around each stamp. The lines were engraved on the plate and served as a guide for the siderographer when aligning the transfer roll to make the plate. Each stamp shares framelines with the adjoining positions. The only other multiples of the 10c Frameline are pairs or strips. This is the only recorded block, and with the "+" frameline between stamps and framelines at sides, is an ideal way to show the layout of the framelines.

From our 1987 Rarities sale. With 1979 P.F. and 2006 C.S.A. certificates. Illustrated in the Confederate States Catalog and Handbook on p. 342, where it is priced at $45,000.00. Scott Retail $30,000.00 (Image)

FINE-VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE STRIP OF FOUR OF THE CONFEDERATE STATES 10-CENT FRAMELINE ISSUE -- ONE OF THE FEW REMAINING MULTIPLES OF FOUR.

Scott 10 is the rarest Confederate States General Issue stamp in unused condition. There are perhaps four or five strips of four known, as well as the strip of seven offered in Kilbourne Part One (Siegel Sale 1186, lot 776), plus another strip of seven offered in our 1980 Rarities sale and the block of four offered in the previous lot.

From our 1983 Rarities Sale and ex Everett and Bush. Scott Retail $30,000.00 as original-gum strip of four (Image)

For many years this April 23 cover was the earliest known use of the 10c Frameline. The EDU is now April 19 (Scott Catalog states April 21 and should be updated). C.S.A. Catalogue value for April 1863 date on cover is $10,500.00

EXTREMELY FINE. REGARDED AS THE FINEST OF THE FEW 10-CENT FRAMELINE STAMPS KNOWN ON COVERS FROM TENNESSEE. ONE OF A HANDFUL OF FOUR-FRAMELINE STAMPS ON COVER FROM ANY CONFEDERATE STATE.

By mid-1863, when the 10c Frameline was released, much of Tennessee was occupied by Federal forces. Greenville, in eastern Tennessee, was one of the last cities to fall, and it received more of the General Issues than any other post office. Scott Gallagher reported six known Frameline covers from Tennessee and we doubt there are many outside that population.
