I (18), Plate 12, Relief C, horizontal strip of three with interpane and centerline margin at left, on red and blue overall 7-Star Confederate Flag Patriotic cover (F7-2B) to Meedow Tenn., strip somewhat faulty at right, cover nicked at left and folded in such a way that the flagstaff at left appears on the back (no doubt done in production), missing part of backflap

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE CONFEDERATE MISSISSIPPI USE OF THE ONE-CENT TYPE I 1857 ISSUE ON AN OVERALL FLAG DESIGN PATRIOTIC COVER, SENT TO TENNESSEE, WHICH WAS STILL PART OF THE UNION.

Sam Meek in Columbus Miss. with blue 8-Star Octagon Canton Patriotic design (F8-15), center of design with illustration of building (college?) over the large star surrounded by "Aberdeen Mississippi, Commercial J.D. McAlister, Proprietor", reduced at right and small edge tear at bottom

VERY FINE. THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THIS SPECTACULAR AND UNUSUAL CONFEDERATE 8-STAR PATRIOTIC DESIGN.

This design is unlike any other listed in the C.S.A. Catalog. The Confederate State use of U.S. postage adds to its desirability.

FINE APPEARANCE. AN EXTREMELY RARE EXAMPLE OF ONE OF THE MOST ELUSIVE OF THE 9-STAR FLAG PATRIOTIC DESIGNS. THE ARKANSAS ORIGIN ADDS TO ITS RARITY AND DESIRABILITY.

The ninth star represents the admission of Arkansas, which was followed only three days later by North Carolina. Due to the short time period there were fewer 9-Star Confederate Patriotic designs produced than any other flag designs (7 thru 13 stars). Surviving examples are rare and are normally found with the F9-2 design (see lot 569). This flag (F9-1) is on a similar order of rarity to the other listed 9-Star design (F9-4). This is also a very rare Arkansas Independent State use of U.S. postage. Arkansas seceded on May 6 and was admitted to the Confederacy on May 18, so this use was possible for only 12 days. (Image)
