VERY FINE. A PHENOMENAL CONFEDERATE STATE USE OF UNITED STATES STAMPS ON A 7-STAR CONFEDERATE FLAG PATRIOTIC COVER WITH ADVERTISING FOR THE STEAMER VICKSBURG.
According to the Hugh Feldman book, U.S. Contract Mail Routes by Water, the Vicksburg-New Orleans mail route (No. 8165) was operated by T. C. Holmes and ran from July 1858 to May 1861. In February 1859, the Princess exploded with a loss of 70 lives and was replaced on the route by the Vicksburg, a 635-ton steamer built in New Albany, Indiana, in 1857. Feldman lists J. M. White as master, but the captain is identified as "R. Holmes" on this cover and in advertisements for the Vicksburg. Richard Holmes was identified as captain of the steamboat Charmer in a newspaper account of that vessel's destruction by fire in February 1861.
Illustrated in Wishnietsky book on p. 23 and in Milgram book on p. 709. Ex Wishnietsky, from whom the Kilbournes acquired the cover privately (Image)

VERY FINE. AN EXTREMELY RARE CONFEDERATE "FREE TRADE" PATRIOTIC COVER AND ESPECIALLY DESIRABLE WITH THE ONE-CENT 1857 ISSUE USED FROM GEORGIA DURING THE BRIEF PERIOD OF INDEPENDENT STATEHOOD.
Georgia seceded on January 19, 1861, and was admitted to the Confederacy on February 4; therefore, Independent State use of U.S. postage from Georgia could only occur during a brief 16-day period. Any example of Georgia Independent State use is scarce, and this Southern Confederacy-Free Trade cover with a 1c strip is one of the most outstanding examples.

VERY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL AND EXCEEDINGLY RARE CONFEDERATE STATE USE OF THE ONE-CENT 1857 ISSUE ON A DAVIS-STEPHENS OVERALL DESIGN PATRIOTIC COVER.
Ex Antrim and "Sevenoaks." With 1998 P.F. certificate (Image)
EXTREMELY FINE. A COLORFUL AND OUTSTANDING MISSISSIPPI CONFEDERATE STATE USE OF A UNITED STATES STAMP ON A JEFFERSON DAVIS MEDALLION PATRIOTIC COVER.
Our records trace this cover to a 1953 Harmer, Rooke sale. The use of United States postage on a Jefferson Davis Medallion Patriotic is rare, because the envelopes were generally used after U.S. stamps were invalid (June 1, 1861). The "Our Flag SC" patriotic label stands for "Southern Congress."

VERY FINE. A RARE AND OUTSTANDING TENNESSEE INDEPENDENT STATE USE OF A UNITED STATES STAMP ON A JEFFERSON DAVIS MEDALLION PATRIOTIC COVER -- MAILED AFTER U.S. STAMPS WERE NO LONGER VALID IN THE CONFEDERACY, BUT BEFORE TENNESSEE WAS ADMITTED AS THE 11TH STATE.
Tennessee was admitted to the Confederacy on July 2, 1861, and was an Independent State for less than a month. This is a particularly rare use, as the U.S. stamp was used well after the June 1 start of the Confederate postal system and U.S. stamps were no longer valid in the Confederacy.

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. AN OUTSTANDING TEXAS CONFEDERATE STATE USE OF U.S. POSTAGE ON A RARE JEFFERSON DAVIS PATRIOTIC COVER.
This crudely printed design is one of the rarest Davis medallion varieties. It is known with and without verse. This example with the U.S. 3c 1857 Issue used from Confederate Texas is particularly desirable. (Image)
VERY FINE. THIS TEXAS LONE STAR PATRIOTIC COVER -- AN INDEPENDENT STATE USE OF U.S. POSTAGE -- AND THE ORIGINAL MATCHING LETTERSHEET ARE REUNITED IN THE KILBOURNE COLLECTION AFTER MANY YEARS OF SEPARATION. A WONDERFUL PAIR OF RARITIES AND THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THIS PATRIOTIC DESIGN ON A LETTERSHEET.
The cover and lettersheet offered here were part of the Blake Myers collection at least as far back as the 1970's. In 1990, Mr. Myers separated the letter and sold the cover alone in the Christie's sale that also offered the Weill Brothers' Stock of Confederates, where it was acquired by the Kilbournes. The cover is one of only two recorded examples of the Texas Lone Star design. The enclosed lettersheet was sold by Mr. Myers in Siegel Sale 753 in 1993. From there the letter passed through two different owners before it was acquired by Dr. Ralph Brandon in 2007. When Siegel sold the Brandon collection in 2014, Mr. Kilbourne was the winning bidder, thereby reuniting the two Lone Star rarities.
The cover is illustrated in Confederate Patriotic Covers and Their Usages. Ex Myers (both) and Dr. Brandon (lettersheet). Cover with 1978 C.S.A. certificate (Image)
VERY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL AND RARE CONFEDERATE STATE USE OF U.S. POSTAGE WITH THE SOUTH CAROLINA PALMETTO STATE FLAG. VERY FEW ARE KNOWN.
This Palmetto Flag Patriotic design comes in two variations -- one with seven attachments to the flagstaff as seen here, and one with three attachments (FSC-3B, offered in the following lot). Both are rare (Image)
VERY FINE. A CHOICE AND RARE CONFEDERATE STATE USE OF U.S. POSTAGE WITH THE SOUTH CAROLINA PALMETTO STATE FLAG. VERY FEW ARE KNOWN.
This Palmetto Flag Patriotic design comes in two variations -- one with seven attachments to the flagstaff (FSC-3A, offered in previous lot) and one with three attachments as seen here. Both are rare, though we do not recall seeing this design in light blue before.
