VERY FINE APPEARING EXAMPLE OF THIS GREAT RARITY OF MATCH & MEDICINE COLLECTING. THE ONE-CENT DR. A.W. CHASE ISSUE ON WATERMARKED PAPER IS EXTREMELY RARE.

The 1c Dr. Chase stamp was issued on silk paper in June of 1877 by National Bank Note Co., who also produced the dies and plates. Prior to October 1, 1880 the American Bank Note Company took over production, and issued a small number of the 1c stamps on watermarked paper. We have been able to locate only two others: one is ex Joyce, the other is ex Tolman and "Scarsdale". It is not listed in the Aldrich census. (Image)
