The 2-1/2p stamp paid the British Colonial postage, and the red crayon "15" indicated that U.S. postage for over-3,000 miles was fully paid. The 12c and 3c 1861 stamps were affixed in Victoria, and the cover was carried to San Francisco, where the U.S. stamps were cancelled.

FINE APPEARANCE. AN EXTREMELY RARE USE OF THE BARNARD'S CARIBOO EXPRESS LABEL AND 12-CENT 1861 ISSUE ON A COVER FROM VICTORIA TO CANADA WEST VIA SAN FRANCISCO.
Barnard's Cariboo Express was founded in December 1861 by Francis Barnard in Yale, British Columbia. It was created during the Cariboo Gold Rush to carry mail, freight and passengers, serving the Cariboo and Fraser Fort George regions of British Columbia. The rare Barnard's Cariboo Express label was used to indicates express carriage from the Gold Rush region to Victoria. There are fewer than five recorded examples of this label used with the 12c 1861 Issue. The blue Victoria "Coat of Arms" handstamp was struck for payment of British Colonial postage. The 3c and 12c stamps were applied in Victoria over the Barnard's label for the 15c U.S. rate to Canada and were cancelled in San Francisco. (Image)
