GREAT BRITAIN, 1841, 1p Red Brown, "A" Missing From
Bottom Right Corner (3d; SG 12a). Plate 77, letter position B-(A), large margins to close (but clearing) at top right, very lightly cancelled, rich color, sharp impression VERY FINE. A FABULOUS EXAMPLE OF THIS STRIKING AND VERY RARE
ERROR. When the first stamps from plate 77 were produced, the "A" from position "B-A" was missing. This unusual error is commonly known as the "B-blank" error. The error was soon discovered and corrected, which is known as Plate 77b. An example
of the corrected variety is also included in this lot (it has a minor corner fault). Even the corrected variety is scarce and catalogues £1,900 in the Stanley Gibbons Specialised Catalogue (No. BS29b). An immensely rare error, it is
missing from many advanced Line Engraved Collections. Our firm has not offered one in the last thirty years. This example was last offered at auction in the 1962 Robson Lowe sale of Father Arnold Jordan S.J., where it was described as "The finest
known example of this rarity." With 1949 R.P.S. certificate. Catalogue values are solely for the B-blank error. SG £26,000 (Image) View PDF of certificate Search for comparables at
