EXTREMELY FINE. A VISUALLY STUNNING ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE ONE-PENNY RED PRINTED FROM THE BLACK PLATES.
In 1841 it was decided to change the color of the One Penny stamp from black to red, to prevent cleaning and re-use. The very first One Penny Red stamps were printed from seven plates (1b, 2, 5, 8, 9, 10, and 11) used for the One Penny Black stamp while the Black stamps were still being used. Shortly after, new plates for the One Penny Red stamp were made. Plate 8 is one of the scarcest of the seven plates
