Top sheet margin block of eleven, original gum, a few stamps lightly hinged, vertical crease between stamps, horizontal crease across bottom edge, couple faint toned spots, pencil note in margin "Very scarce. The last to be had at the office."

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. ONE OF THE LARGEST SURVIVING MULTIPLES OF THE BROADWAY POST OFFICE STAMP. AN OUTSTANDING EXHIBITION ITEM.

The largest recorded block -- the ex-Jarrett block of 32 -- was divided into eight blocks of four (confirmed by photo). The next largest multiple is the block of 25 offered from the Siegel sale of the D.K. Collection (Sale 862, lot 66), which was found in a desk during the early 1900's and reported in 1955 by Marie F. Craig, who received the block from her uncle.

FINE. THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED UNUSED EXAMPLE OF THE CALIFORNIA CITY LETTER EXPRESS STAMP AVAILABLE TO COLLECTORS.

Our records contain five examples of the Red 33L1 stamp. Two additional Type I stamps in black-and-white photos cannot be identified by color. One 33L1 (cut to shape) is contained in the British Library's Tapling collection. Of the four confirmed 33L1's available to collectors, two are used alone on separate covers addressed to Lieut. Col. J. H. Stearns in San Francisco (one ex Middendorf and Geisler, the other ex Wiltsee). The third is an uncancelled stamp off cover (ex Lilly, the example offered here). The fourth is used on cover with a U.S. 10c stamp (ex Lichtenstein, Caspary, Golden and Lyons).

1320   ImageHoman's Branch Post Office, New York N.Y., (unstated value) Black on Yellow (unlisted). "Paid" in italicized caps at bottom, large margins to touched at upper right, affixed to piece of cover with "New-York 5cts. Aug. 6" integral-rate circular datestamp, addressed to Hastings Mich., piece with age toning which does not affect the stamp, Very Fine, a fascinating new discovery that warrants further research, this was almost certainly issued by the same post that issued the Homan's Empire Express stamps (83L1 and varieties), the owner of that operation is reported to have been Richard S. Homan, listed in the 1850-53 city directories as a clerk at 172 Division Street, then as a partner in a flour business at 219 West Street from 1854 to 1859 (according to Elliott Perry) and also an office at 21 Ann Street (Philatelic Gazette Jan.-Dec. 1918, p. 222), the Homan's Empire Express stamp is extremely rare with only five recorded examples, including one that is of a completely different size and format (ex Middendorf), this adhesive is very similar in style and the "Homan's" name is in the same lettering, with 2017 P.F. certificate stating "label...genuinely used on piece" (Image)
