VERY FINE APPEARANCE. THE ONLY RECORDED MULTIPLE OF THE RED HORSE & RIDER STAMP.
Although several panes of the Black stamp were discovered years ago, the Red Horse & Rider stamp has no representation of multiples other than this block.
Illustrated in Kelly series (CCP, Vol. 51, No. 6, p. 348). Ex Golden and D.K. Collection. With 2000 P.F. certificate (Image)
VERY FINE APPEARANCE. ONE OF THREE RECORDED GENUINELY CANCELLED EXAMPLES OF THE BROWN & McGILL'S BLACK CARRIER STAMP.
Our census contains 13 examples of 5LB3, including 10 uncancelled stamps, some (or all) of which were removed from pieces of covers, all dated in 1858. Two of the uncancelled stamps remain on their original covers with a 3c 1857 tied by the Louisville datestamp (Apr. 13 and Aug. 14, 1858 -- each with P.F. certificate). The stamp offered here, with two defective corners, was sold in the 1921 "German Sale" and subsequently repaired. A cancelled stamp tied on a Valentine cover (with 3c 1857 stamp removed) was offered in the Robert Laurence Nov. 15, 1940 sale of the L. B. Mason collection and recently reappeared in a Rumsey sale. Another on piece, ex Harbeck, Chapman, Caspary, Boker and Golden, was last offered in our 2009 Barry K. Schwartz Collection of Kentucky Postal History.
With 1978 P.F. certificate noting "some corner repairing and staining". Acquired by the current owner in a 1978 Kaufmann sale. (Image)
EXTREMELY FINE. ONE OF TWO RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THE UNITED STATES CITY DESPATCH POST STAMP ON GREEN UNSURFACED COLORED-THRU PAPER. ONE OF THE RAREST OF ALL CARRIER ISSUES.
The unsurfaced colored-thru papers used for the first U.S. City Despatch Post stamps were Rosy Buff (4LB2), Light Blue (4LB3) and Green (4LB4). Approximately ten Rosy Buff stamps are known, all unused and most thinned, which are regarded as trial impressions on paper that was not regularly issued. The Light Blue paper was regularly issued and is the most common of the three (it is known used). The elusive Green paper -- the true 6LB4 -- is evidently genuine, although the Scott Catalogue footnote alludes to "some authorities" claiming it is a color changeling (possibly based on Elliott Perry's negative commentary in his 100 Years Ago, p. 25). Only two examples are recorded, both unused without gum: the stamp offered here, ex Caspary and Lilly, and the Extremely Fine stamp offered in our sale of the Hall Collection (Sale 830, lot 137) which was acquired by the Halls from Nassau Stamp Company in 1932. These are probably trial-color impressions, similar in status to the Rosy Buff.
Ex Ferrary, Caspary and Lilly. With 1967 P.F. certificate issued to Raymond H. Weill after purchase in the Lilly sale (Image)
FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE EXAMPLE OF THE BISHOP'S CITY POST 2-CENT BLACK ON BLUISH LAID PAPER.
Our records of the Bishop's 2c Black, Scott 10LB2, contain the following examples: 1-2) horizontal pair with left sheet margin, pencil cancel, used on inbound cover with Ste. Marie Hotel corner card and 3c 1851, Siegel Sale 784, lot 2197, ex Worthington, Boker; 3) margins all around, pencil "/" cancel (Siegel Sale 1002, lot 4036), ex Needham (on a cover to which it did not belong), Middendorf; 4) cut in at right and bottom, pencil "X" cancel, ex Caspary (on a cover to which it did not belong) and Skove, Siegel Sale 764, lot 1369, as off-cover stamp; 5) cut in at bottom, uncancelled, ex Needham; and 6) the example offered here. It is significant that both the Golden and Hall collections did not have this stamp represented.
