1199 c ImageMagnetic Telegraph Co., "Amos Kendall, Agent for S.F.B. Morse." Signature on June 22, 1846 folded letter to J. C. Brodhead in Boston, neat strikes of red "New York 10cts 25 Jun." integral-rate circular datestamp and straightline "BALTIMORE R.R." handstamp, transcript of letter included and states in part, "Sir, in accordance with the Articles of Agreement and Specifications constituting the Magnetic Telegraph Company...it has become my duty to inform you that funds are wanted to put up another substantial wire from Washington City or Baltimore to Jersey City opposite New York...", Very Fine, Kendall was a prominent Jacksonian politician and served as postmaster general under Jackson, after returning to private life he was a major promoter and investor with Samuel Morse, founding the Magnetic Telegraph Co., the first privately owned telegraph line in the United States (Image)

President Taylor's autograph endorsement "Referred to Mr. Meredith to be acted on as he may think best. Respectfully Z.T." on buff cover addressed to "The President", circular bronze on black glazed seal of "Magnetic Telegraph Company/Office/Cor. Louisiana/avanue [sic] & Six St./Washington", with original enclosure on printed New York & Washington Telegraph form, received at Washington D.C. office, datelined "Buffalo May 23d 1849" from Vice President Millard Fillmore to President Taylor, expressing his surprise at the appointment of a collector and using influence to have the appointment withdrawn until Fillmore's colleagues reach the capital, Fillmore's name is signed in the telegraph operator's hand at bottom

EXTREMELY FINE. AN OUTSTANDING PRESIDENTIAL AUTOGRAPH ON A MAGNETIC TELEGRAPH CO. COVER DURING THE EARLIEST YEARS OF THE TELEGRAPH.

Zachary Taylor died only two years after assuming office. His presidential documents are scarce in any form. This telegraph related use, from Vice President and future President Millard Fillmore, is an outstanding combination of American history and telegraph postal history and is one of the highlights of the Born collection (Image)

Collection of more than 40 covers and a far greater number of telegrams plus a few letters in a thick binder, full range of designs as listed in 1993 ASCC on pp. 9-15 including four of the "Magnetic Telegraph Office Phila." handstamp (ASCC No. 2, rarity 8), which are rarely seen at all never mind as a group, good representation of the pictorial Eagle and Morse designs, some flaws to be found incl. one of the ASCC No. 2 covers acidified, Fine-Very Fine collection of this early telegraph, Magnetic Telegraph Co. was begun in 1845 by Morse patentees incl. Amos Kendall as the first privately owned telegraph line, it absorbed the North American Telegraph Co. and was eventually consolidated into the American Telegraph Co. in Jan. 1860 (Image)
