EXTREMELY FINE. AN EXTREMELY RARE PAIR OF THE 10-CENT "TEN" ON COVER AND WITHOUT QUESTION ONE OF THE FINEST EXTANT.

Powhattan Ellis Jr. enlisted in the 3rd Kentucky Mounted Infantry. He served in that unit throughout 1861, then through the rest of the war served as Assistant Adjutant General to a series of Confederate generals: Lloyd Tilghman, Patrick R. Cleburn, Leonidas Polk, Richard Taylor, Stephen D. Lee, and Nathan B. Forrest. He fought in the Battles of Corinth and Fort Donelson, and in other battles in the army of the Southwest. By the end of the war, he had reached the rank of Major.

VERY FINE. A REMARKABLE ADVERSITY USE OF THE UNITED STATES 3-CENT STAR DIE ENTIRE WITH TWO 10-CENT FRAMELINE STAMPS PAYING DOUBLE THE 10-CENT RATE.

This cover is addressed in the hand of Confederate Navy Lieutenant George W. Gift, one of the officers who accompanied Captain John Wilkinson to Canada in October 1863 on a secret mission to organize a raid on Johnson's Island Prison. He sent this cover to his future wife a few months before leaving on the mission.
