Full to large margins, tied by "Smithfield N.C." circular datestamp on blue legal-size cover to "Commander of the 'Home Guard' of Davie County, Mocksville, Davie Co., N.C.", endorsed "Official Business", accompanied by a letter on "Office of Records, Tax in Kind" letterhead with Mar. 16, 1865 date (we cannot tell if it belongs with this cover -- probably not), interesting content late in the war incl. "...between here and Fayetteville... is filled with mills, factories etc., which is a dandy morsel to this great 'Wm. the Conquerer'" (referring to Sherman), also "Under the wise head of Genl. Robert E. Lee our concentrated and consolidated army will knock Shermans and Grants bubble of military glory into the air... With God and Gen. lee on our side who can defeat us...", 24 days later Lee surrendered and the writer's question was answered, reinforced splits in letter, cover has folds and some toning, still a Fine pair (Image)
