Patriotics–Independent and Confederate State Use of U.S. Stamps
Lot Sym. Lot Description
522 c ImageVicksburg Miss. Apr. 11 (1861). Clear strike of double-circle datestamp, three strikes of "PAID" straightline ties together pair and single 3c Dull Red, Ty. III (26) on cover to Zanesville O. with red and blue 7-Star Confederate Flag and "Steamer Vicksburg, R. Holmes, Master, Leaves New Orleans, Tuesday at 5 P.M., Vicksburg, Saturday at 6 A.M." steamboat advertisement (F7-14), right margin of right stamp slightly affected from placement at edge of cover

VERY FINE. A PHENOMENAL CONFEDERATE STATE USE OF UNITED STATES STAMPS ON A 7-STAR CONFEDERATE FLAG PATRIOTIC COVER WITH ADVERTISING FOR THE STEAMER VICKSBURG.

According to the Hugh Feldman book, U.S. Contract Mail Routes by Water, the Vicksburg-New Orleans mail route (No. 8165) was operated by T. C. Holmes and ran from July 1858 to May 1861. In February 1859, the Princess exploded with a loss of 70 lives and was replaced on the route by the Vicksburg, a 635-ton steamer built in New Albany, Indiana, in 1857. Feldman lists J. M. White as master, but the captain is identified as "R. Holmes" on this cover and in advertisements for the Vicksburg. Richard Holmes was identified as captain of the steamboat Charmer in a newspaper account of that vessel's destruction by fire in February 1861.

Illustrated in Wishnietsky book on p. 23 and in Milgram book on p. 709. Ex Wishnietsky, from whom the Kilbournes acquired the cover privately (Image)

523 c ImageSavannah Ga. Jan. 21, 1861. Circular datestamp and duplex grid cancels tie strip of three 1c Blue, Ty. V (24), second clear strike of datestamp at left on cover to Marion Ala. with "A Southern Confederacy!/ Free Trade With the World!" Slogan (PS-1), a fourth 1c stamp is affixed as a seal to the backflap, torn where backflap was torn on opening

VERY FINE. AN EXTREMELY RARE CONFEDERATE "FREE TRADE" PATRIOTIC COVER AND ESPECIALLY DESIRABLE WITH THE ONE-CENT 1857 ISSUE USED FROM GEORGIA DURING THE BRIEF PERIOD OF INDEPENDENT STATEHOOD.

Georgia seceded on January 19, 1861, and was admitted to the Confederacy on February 4; therefore, Independent State use of U.S. postage from Georgia could only occur during a brief 16-day period. Any example of Georgia Independent State use is scarce, and this Southern Confederacy-Free Trade cover with a 1c strip is one of the most outstanding examples.

525 c ImageBrandon Miss. May 19, 1861. Mostly clear circular datestamp ties 3c Dull Red, Ty. III (26) on yellow cover to Liberty Va. with black Jefferson Davis Medallion, 7-Star Flags and Sunburst Patriotic design (JD-1A) and "Our Flag SC" Patriotic label, no marking ties the label, but it appears to be original to the cover

EXTREMELY FINE. A COLORFUL AND OUTSTANDING MISSISSIPPI CONFEDERATE STATE USE OF A UNITED STATES STAMP ON A JEFFERSON DAVIS MEDALLION PATRIOTIC COVER.

Our records trace this cover to a 1953 Harmer, Rooke sale. The use of United States postage on a Jefferson Davis Medallion Patriotic is rare, because the envelopes were generally used after U.S. stamps were invalid (June 1, 1861). The "Our Flag SC" patriotic label stands for "Southern Congress."

526 c ImageRandolph Ten. Jun. 25, (1861). Clear strike off balloon-style circular datestamp ties 3c Dull Red, Ty. III (26) on buff cover to Governor Harris at Marshall Tenn. with purplish-black Jefferson Davis Medallion, 7-Star Flags, 10-Star Sunburst and Verse Patriotic design (JD-1B, Verse 53), stamp with vertical crease and small margin flaws at bottom from placement at edge of cover

VERY FINE. A RARE AND OUTSTANDING TENNESSEE INDEPENDENT STATE USE OF A UNITED STATES STAMP ON A JEFFERSON DAVIS MEDALLION PATRIOTIC COVER -- MAILED AFTER U.S. STAMPS WERE NO LONGER VALID IN THE CONFEDERACY, BUT BEFORE TENNESSEE WAS ADMITTED AS THE 11TH STATE.

Tennessee was admitted to the Confederacy on July 2, 1861, and was an Independent State for less than a month. This is a particularly rare use, as the U.S. stamp was used well after the June 1 start of the Confederate postal system and U.S. stamps were no longer valid in the Confederacy.

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. AN OUTSTANDING TEXAS CONFEDERATE STATE USE OF U.S. POSTAGE ON A RARE JEFFERSON DAVIS PATRIOTIC COVER.

This crudely printed design is one of the rarest Davis medallion varieties. It is known with and without verse. This example with the U.S. 3c 1857 Issue used from Confederate Texas is particularly desirable. (Image)

528 c ImageHempstead Tex. Feb. 7 (1861). Circular datestamp with 5-Point Star fancy cancel tying 3c Dull Red, Ty. III (26) on cover to Coila, Washington County N.Y. with red and blue Texas Lone Star Flag Patriotic design (FTX-1), accompanied by original matching lettersheet with same Lone Star design and embossed crest, two-page letter datelined Hempstead, Feb. 7, 1861, mostly business matters though it refers to Texas secession and ends: "A company went from this place to the frontier to stop the Indian depredations I reckon they have cleared them all out as we have heard nothing of 'Injins' since."

VERY FINE. THIS TEXAS LONE STAR PATRIOTIC COVER -- AN INDEPENDENT STATE USE OF U.S. POSTAGE -- AND THE ORIGINAL MATCHING LETTERSHEET ARE REUNITED IN THE KILBOURNE COLLECTION AFTER MANY YEARS OF SEPARATION. A WONDERFUL PAIR OF RARITIES AND THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THIS PATRIOTIC DESIGN ON A LETTERSHEET.

The cover and lettersheet offered here were part of the Blake Myers collection at least as far back as the 1970's. In 1990, Mr. Myers separated the letter and sold the cover alone in the Christie's sale that also offered the Weill Brothers' Stock of Confederates, where it was acquired by the Kilbournes. The cover is one of only two recorded examples of the Texas Lone Star design. The enclosed lettersheet was sold by Mr. Myers in Siegel Sale 753 in 1993. From there the letter passed through two different owners before it was acquired by Dr. Ralph Brandon in 2007. When Siegel sold the Brandon collection in 2014, Mr. Kilbourne was the winning bidder, thereby reuniting the two Lone Star rarities.

The cover is illustrated in Confederate Patriotic Covers and Their Usages. Ex Myers (both) and Dr. Brandon (lettersheet). Cover with 1978 C.S.A. certificate (Image)
