159 c   imageUnited States - Postage Dues 1895-97 Issues (J39var) 1895 2c deep claret, vertical half used as 1c, with vertical overprint "Due 1 cent", tied on arrival by Jefferson, Iowa Oct 13 1895 cds on cover originating from Chicago, where it was franked with 1c blue (Scott 264), tied by Oct 11 Flag cancel, subsequently forwarded from Waucoma Iowa, with violet "Postage Due" and "Forwarded" handstamps, Waucoma and Jefferson arrival pmks on back, Postage Due stamp with stains and surface scrape, with 1985 PFC. In the fall of 1895, the post office in Jefferson, Iowa ran out of 1c Postage Due stamps. The Jefferson postmaster created a small number of bisected 2c stamps as 1c, each overprinted "Due 1 cent". Only 13 such covers are known (Image)
