136 c   imageUnited States - Postage Dues 1884 Isue 1884 cover from England to New York, with "SW 53" and London Nov.28, 1887 departure cds, sent completely unpaid and charged "Due 10 Cents" on arrival in New York, with 10c red brown added at left, tied by" P.O." double oval in violet, confirming double penalty rate on unpaid 5c UPU rate. The cover was sent by William E. Gladstone, the former Prime Minister of Great Britain, with his signature below. While Gladstone had free frank privilege for domestic mail at home, this did not extend to foreign correspondence. A fine and unusual item (William Ewart Gladstone (1809-1898), served four non-consecutive terms as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. His political career thus spanned nearly the entire Victorian era. Historians often rank Gladstone as one of the greatest prime ministers in British history) (Image)
