3582 E   imageOccupation Issues. 1915 (Turkey maintained garrison troops in Yemen and on 2 July 1915, crossed the Aden border and advanced on Lahej, whose Sultan was loyal to the British. A military column was sent to his assistance. After a disastrous march, they reached Lahej but were unable to contest the Turkish advance and withdrew, leaving the unfortunate sultan behind to die in the ruins of his palace). In the absence of standard postal supplies, a negative seal was improvised as a franking postmark at Lahej during the occupation period. Cover (slightly defective and repaired) with triangular handstamp in violet struck on both sides, illustrated in the Coles & Walker and Passer's handbooks (Image) (image 3582a)

3596 E   imageMilitary Mail. 1915-16 incoming mail, two covers from England, one to Captain Newcomb at the 2nd General Hospital, the other to Gunner Mundell of the Howitzer Battery, forwarded to Kut-al-Amara, after its capture by the British on 28 September, 1915. The Ottomans successfully counterattacked, besieged the city for 143 days (between 3 December 1915 and 29 April 1916), resulting in the surrender of approximately 13,000 British-Indian soldiers. Both covers bear "Undelivered Through Capitulation at Kut" handstamps, the first with additional "Prisoner of War Return to Sender" marking, possibly the only surviving example with both handstamps (The capture of Kut was a great victory for the Ottomans and a humiliating defeat for the British Empire. Kut ranks, alongside Yorktown (1781) and Singapore (1942), as one of the three most significant defeats of British Arms, described by Jan Morris, as "the most abject capitulation in Britain's military history") (Image)

3600 ng   image1917 prepared but unissued, 1/4a on 4pa sepia, 1/4a on 5pa purple, 1/4a on 6pa deep blue, 1/2a on 10pa green, 1/2a on 10pa green with pointed star, 1a on 20pa red, 2a on 40pa blue, the complete set of eight, unused without gum, fine-v.f., with seven 1965 BPA certificates and one 1975 Friedl certificate. When discovered that only small quantities of these stamps existed, the decision was made not to issue them at all. As a result, eight copies of each value were kept intact for distribution to high officials. The rest were destroyed. A veritable treasure of British Empire and Iraqi philately, ex-Marquis de Bute collection, one of perhaps only four complete sets of the unissued Baghdad overprints in private hands (mentioned but not listed in Gibbons) (Image) (image 3600a) (image 3600b) (image 3600c)
