3552 E   image1914 (10 Aug) large cover (opened for display) franked with U.S. 5x1c green, sent from Pago Pago to Apia, Samoa, showing handstamp "U.S. Naval Station Tutuila, Samoa", with "APIA SAMOA 20.8.14" arrival on back, opened by censor, with part of red "Kaiserliches Gouvernement von Samoa" seal and endorsed "Opened Under Martial Law" on back. (On 12 August 1914, under decree of the Imperial Governor of Samoa, Dr. Schultz, the postal officials in Apia began to censor mail. Letters were appropriately backstamped, corners cut at the end of the envelopes, slit open in order to remove contents. After inspection, envelopes were closed with an official seal and a handwritten censor notation was applied. Only nine (!) examples of such mail are stated to have been recorded) (Image)
