GERMAN NEW GUINEA Special Issues
LotNo. Symbol CatNo. Lot Description
3395 O Mi.I image1908 (8 Feb) surcharged 3pf on 5pf green, canceled on piece by "Kieta" cds, fine, signed Friedemann, Kosack, Grobe, etc., with 1968 Ebel certificate. Official regulations called for any stamp shortages to be covered in cash. In 1908, the postal agent in Kieta, New Guinea, created "3pf" Provisionals to meet demand for printer matter postcards to be used by sailors of the survey ship "Planet". Only 5-6 examples of this "provisional" exist and it was long considered to be one of the rarest stamps from the German Colonies. Michel now lists the "Kieta Provisional" as a private issue of uncertain status (Cat No. Mi.I) (Image) (image 3395a)
