Spink London The "KMC" Collection of Stamps and Covers of Mexico - December 10, 2024 The collection features an interesting selection from the 1856 "Hidalgo" Issue, with a significant portion comprising items from the renowned Mazepa collection, unseen on the market for nearly 25 years. Other highlights include an extensive array of the “Eagle” 3 centavos, with both of the only known examples issued on laid paper. The "Eagles" issue is further enriched by a remarkable variety of sub-office printings. The sale also presents previously unknown "Maximilian" essays and an impressive selection of rarities from the post-classic or semi-modern periods. Highlights:
    • 1856 Issue, Zacatecas Manuscript Overprint ½r. Blue, strip of four with margins varying from complete to ample, just very slightly cut into at top left, affixed to a pristine cover originating from Fresnillo, with excellent cancellations. The cover was either taken privately or sent via the mail service to Aguascalientes, where it was posted and cancelled for onward transmission. This legendary showpiece is one of only two recorded covers, showcasing the largest known multiple of this provisional. While we have not seen the other known cover, the outstanding state of preservation of the cover presented here is noteworthy; it was sold for $16,000 at the 2000 Regency auction (lot #5575). MEPSI certificate. Scott 1; NF $10,000 as single stamps off cover. (Lot 84)
    • 1856 Issue, Mexico District 1r. Yellow on cover front (rebacked), tied by superb bold strike of "diligencias generales/linea de toluca" oval handstamp illustrated with stagecoach, and accompanying "gratis" oval at top, both applied at stagecoach company offices for letters submitted there, rather than at post offices. The stamp used out of its district. Just a handful of covers or cover fronts are known with stagecoach cancellations; this example likely holds the greatest visual appeal and is among the most attractive cancellations of Mexico's classic period. A spectacular exhibition item. This item was featured on the cover of the Mazepa auction sale of Mexico (Regency Auctions, 2000). MEPSI certificate. Scott 2. (Lot 40)
    • 1864 "Eagles" Issue, Mexico District No Overprint 3c. Brown on laid paper, unoverprinted and uncancelled, possessing part o.g., large margins all around and sharp impression. The 3c. stamp, produced in 1865-66, served as an experiment for local city mail, with only 2,403 units issued. Additionally, the unoverprinted stamps are likely remainders from that period and are very rare. Only the stamps from consignment 157-1865, of which 100 were issued, are known to be printed on laid paper, with only two examples recorded to date (Pietsch documented just one). Scott 18b (var), $4,500 as an overprinted stamp. (Lot 178)

Spink London British Guiana Part 1 - The Simon Greenwood Collection - December 11, 2024 ‘British Guiana is an incredibly important and popular collecting area, its early issues having become synonymous with rarity and prestige. These highly important and elusive stamps have captured the interest of the most distinguished collectors throughout philatelic history, rarities from this territory being crowning jewels in these world class collections. This sale, along with the second part, presents a remarkable opportunity for ambitious collectors to dive headlong into the world of this highly prestigious area of philately. Included in these auctions are many of British Guiana’s great rarities, including two of the most important covers, making this an unmissable philatelic event. ‘Highlights:
    • The "Weill Cover", One of the Great Gems of Worldwide Philately 2c. black on rose Type B, a magnificent vertical pair, initialled "E.D.W." on 1851 (26 Nov.) entire letter to "Edward Gordon Esq., Plant. Good Hope", cancelled by "DEMERARA" double-arc d.s.. The pair is of excellent colour for this stamp and cut square with good to large margins on three sides, close at left with frameline of lower stamp just impinged upon. As is inevitable for any old domestic letter of this colony, there is slight age staining. S.G. 1, £650,000 off cover for cut round; unpriced for cut square. (Lot 47)
    • One Cent The Unique Cover Bearing the Largest Multiple 1853 (5 Mar.) entire from Sparta to Georgetown, bearing 1c. black on magenta strip of four Types I-II-I-II, sheet margin at left, good to large margins on the other sides, each centrally cancelled by fine "b g/a 5 c" c.d.s. (Type D1) and showing, on reverse, arrival double-arc d.s. (6.3); the second stamp crossed by vertical crease. The unique cover exhibiting the largest multiple of this stamp, with additionally two strips of four and two blocks of four recorded in used condition off cover. Undoubtedly the most attractive cover of this issue, featuring an excellent combination of beauty and rarity. R.P.S. Certificate (1986). S.G. 9. (Lot 79)
    • The Unique Mixed Franking in the 1856 Type-Set Issue 1856 (16 June) envelope from London to Mahaicony, bearing GB 1d. red pair and 1855 4d. carmine on blued paper, both cancelled "18" in oval of bars, upon arrival 4c. black on magenta applied to pay the internal rate, cut octagonally with small margins, initialled "E.D.W.", tied by Demerara double-arc d.s. for 11 July and showing, on reverse, despatch c.d.s. and Demerara double-arc d.s. for 9 July. Fewer than fifteen covers bearing the 1856 provisional 4 cents on magenta are recorded, of which nine are cut octagonally. The greatest attribute of this outstanding and marvellous exhibition item is its unique combination, within the entire issue, with a foreign franking. Of great visual impact, not only for its combination franking, but also for its excellent quality. R.P.S. Certificate (1954). S.G. 24. (Lot 144)
    • 1934-51 Pictorial Issue 4c. slate-violet upper left corner block of four, variety imperforate horizontally, some loss of gum in top margin otherwise fine. A spectacular exhibition item with this variety and a very rare multiple with very few in existence. S.G. 291b, £48,000. (Lot 306)
