Chinese Republic continued...

1912 "Republic of China" Overprints
LotNo. Symbol Lot Description
2069 O image1912, Statistical Dept. "Republic of China" overprint, $1 red and flesh, inverted overprint (Chan 164b. Scott 158a), basic stamp position 45, overprint type 4, resilient colors, outstanding centering, clearly cancelled by "Kwangtung, Kwangchow" (Canton) c.d.s. of 17 June, 1st year (1912), one thin perforation at left which is of no consequence to the exceptional quality of what is one of the great rarities of the early Republic, Very Fine, and one of the finest examples extant, especially so with such a legible cancellation.

There are probably only 10 or so documented examples of this variety known to date. Of these, only four examples, including the above, have the complete "June 17 1st year date".

From studies undertaken of the genuine extant examples, it appears that all were used on the same day, 17 June 1st year (1912), in Kwangtung, Kwangchow, though the city and province names are not legible on some of the examples.

Expertization
Gebrüder Senf, Leipzig.

Provenance
Brun Pederson, Stanley Gibbons (London), 15.2.1980, lot 1302
Henry Nyi, Interasia (Hong Kong). 25.9.2011, 2115.
