1894 Dowager Empress 60th Birthday Commemorative Issue continued...

Large Figure Surcharges 1.5mm Setting on Dowager Redrawn

Postal History

1897 New Currency Surcharges continued...
LotNo. Symbol Lot Description
187 og image1897, Large Figures narrow surcharges on Dowager, 3rd printing, ½c. on 3ca. pale chrome yellow, variety surcharge inverted (Chan 74g. Scott 65a), unusually deep color for this, particularly well centered, fresh, unused with large part original gum, Very Fine.

The pale yellow color of the stamp, which makes the design difficult to see, provides a logical explanation as to how the sheets could have been placed upside down for surcharging. Probably two sheets comprised of eight panes (160 stamps) were surcharged with this error.

Provenance
Paul Hock, Robson Lowe (Zurich), 19.10.1983, lot 266.
Anna-Lisa and Sven-Eric Beckeman, Sotheby's and Corinphila (Hong Kong), 13.5.1999, lot C6. (Image1) (Image2)
