Each of the six low value sheets are laid out so that horizontal rows contain 10 of the same overprint and each vertical column has 10 different overprints: (top to bottom) Constantinople, Mt. Athos, Ierusalem, Metelin, Salonique, Smyrne, Trebizonde, Jaffa, Karrasunde, and Rizeh; four positions in each sheet have the "Constantinopie" error, two have "M nt Athos," two have "Mont Atho," and five have "erusalem"; apparently, the "M nt Athos" does not exist on the issued 1pi on 10k, because it is not priced in Scott, but this proof sheet includes two: positions 1 & 6. The two strips of each of the high values are overprinted with the same 10 Offices as the six low values The sheets & strips are basically never hinged except for a few peripheral positions with minor hinge remnants and there is a bit of separation, Fine to Very Fine. A rare oppotunity for the Specialist., each sheet and strip is signed Bloch.

Shipping charges apply - weight 1 lbs.

475 stanton, edwin m. imageEdwin M. Stanton Free frank as Secretary of War, on fresh and crisp legal sized War Dept. Official Business cover to Hon. Edwin Greble in Philadelphia, neat "Washington D.C. Free Aug. 1" circular datestamp, large intact wax seal with a large "S" at center on reverse, Extremely Fine cover and signature.

The recipient, Edwin Greble was a monument maker, stone cutter, and owner of a marble yard. He was a director of the Franklin Institute, served as a select councilman from the 8th ward, and in 1863, raised a company of 80 men for the defense of Philadelphia, although its services were not needed. One of his sons, John Trout Greble (January 19, 1834-June 10, 1861), was killed in action at the Battle of Big Bethel, becoming the first Regular Army officer and graduate of the United States Military Academy killed in the Civil War. Stanton was sworn in as Secretary of War January 20, 1862 and served until May 28, 1868. So this cover dates between 1862 and 1867, but we figure it is most likely 1862 or 1863.
