601 spaceshipone ansari x prize imageSpaceShipOne Ansari X PRIZE Twice-Flown Cover Signed by Mike Melvill, Brian Binnie & Burt Rutan, Framed, Exceptional framed Ansari X PRIZE commemorative cover carried aboard SpaceShipOne on both qualifying flights that captured the $10 million Ansari X PRIZE in 2004. The cover bears Mojave, California cancellations dated September 29 and October 4, 2004, corresponding to the two historic flights, and is signed by pilot Mike Melvill, pilot Brian Binnie, and SpaceShipOne designer Burt Rutan. On September 29, 2004, Melvill piloted SpaceShipOne to approximately 102.9 kilometers, completing the first of the two required X PRIZE flights. Five days later, on October 4, Binnie flew the same privately developed spacecraft to approximately 112 kilometers, securing the Ansari X PRIZE for the Scaled Composites team. SpaceShipOne thereby became the first privately owned and operated spacecraft to exceed 100 kilometers twice within the required two-week period, a landmark achievement in the development of commercial human spaceflight. The accompanying printed X PRIZE Foundation presentation explicitly states that the cover was flown in space twice, first aboard SpaceShipOne X1 on September 29 and again aboard X2 on October 4, and identifies the signatures of Melvill, Binnie, and Rutan. The display is completed by four photographs relating to SpaceShipOne and the X PRIZE program and is professionally matted and framed as shown.Flown SpaceShipOne material is genuinely scarce. Contemporary documentation notes that relatively few flown objects were made available to the public, with certified SpaceShipOne artifacts signed by Rutan, Melvill, and Binnie attracting serious aerospace collectors. An outstanding artifact from one of the pivotal moments in modern commercial spaceflight, directly associated with both winning X PRIZE flights and signed by the spacecraft's designer and both pilots who completed them. 610 walker, joseph a. imageJoseph A. "Joe" Walker Signed X-15 Flight-Test Aircraft Photograph-Inscribed to Robert, Framed, Striking color photograph depicting a trio of experimental and flight-test aircraft positioned on the dry lakebed at Edwards Air Force Base, boldly signed and inscribed in red ink by pioneering NASA research pilot Joseph A. "Joe" Walker: "Robert, Best Wishes!" followed by Walker's signature and an inscription referencing his X-15 and lunar-landing research work. Walker was one of the legendary pilots of NASA's X-15 program, completing 25 flights in the rocket-powered research aircraft. On August 22, 1963, he piloted the X-15 to 354,200 feet—approximately 67 miles—setting the program's altitude record and qualifying for astronaut status. NASA also credits Walker as the first pilot of the Lunar Landing Research Vehicle, the experimental craft developed to establish piloting techniques later used during the Apollo lunar landings. Walker's autograph is especially desirable due to his untimely death in 1966, when his F-104 chase aircraft collided with the XB-70 Valkyrie during a formation photography flight. 619 1796 letter image1796 Four-Page Autograph Letter on Episcopal Church Politics & Jay's Treaty, A fascinating four-page autograph letter signed, written from Pimlico, April 27, 1796, to the Rev. William Trumbull of North Haven, Connecticut, by an old friend in London, discussing both ecclesiastical affairs within the Episcopal Church and contemporary international politics. The writer comments at length on disputes concerning Episcopal hierarchy in America, including the authority claimed by the bishops of New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia, and references a pamphlet published in Boston concerning the organization and powers of the American Episcopal Church. The letter also touches on broader religious and political concerns, with pointed remarks regarding aristocratic influence, hierarchy and "Popery."Of particular historical interest is the extensive discussion of Anglo-American and European affairs during the unsettled period following the American Revolution. The writer addresses Jay's Treaty, the possibility of renewed war with France, European naval activity, British relations with the United States and the future of British North America, including Nova Scotia, Cape Breton, St. John's Island, New Brunswick and Canada.Written on legal-folio sheets and retaining substantial content throughout. The bottom margin has been clipped, resulting in the loss of approximately one or two lines of text on each page; also showing a loss from an old seal tear, light soiling, folds and expected age-related handling wear. Otherwise very good, with unusually rich religious and political content spanning the early American Episcopal Church and late-18th-century Atlantic affairs. (Image) (Image2) (All Images)

623 consular image19th Century U.S. Consular & Customs Archive, 1830s-1890s, Foreign Trade, Shipping & Seals, Fascinating and substantial archive of original 19th-century American consular, customs, commercial and maritime documents, spanning approximately the 1830s through the 1890s and documenting the mechanics of American international trade and diplomatic activity during a transformative period in United States history. The assemblage contains manuscript and partly printed consular certificates, invoices, affidavits, declarations of merchandise, customs papers, shipping documents and related correspondence originating from or involving American diplomatic and commercial posts throughout Europe and the Atlantic world. Locations represented include Belfast, Rotterdam, St. John, St. Helena, Madeira/Funchal, Alexandria and France, with numerous documents relating to merchandise ultimately destined for Philadelphia and other American ports.Particularly attractive are the numerous official consular forms bearing American eagle devices, manuscript endorsements and signatures of United States consular officials, together with embossed, wafer and applied seals, ribbons and other methods of official authentication. Several retain especially handsome seals and attachments, including a Madeira consular certificate with large red seal and purple ribbon, Belfast material with applied seal, blue-sealed consular documents, and papers carrying Philadelphia Custom House and Collector's Office markings.Commercial subjects represented include petroleum barrels shipped from Rotterdam, merchandise and manufactured goods, textiles and linen, metal, barrels, shipping charges, invoices and declarations of value. An early St. John, New Brunswick group dating to the 1830s concerns merchandise shipped to Philadelphia and includes printed American consular forms with manuscript completion and official certification. Later material illustrates the increasingly standardized system of American consular documentation employed to authenticate foreign merchandise entering the United States. Also included is an 1889 manuscript letter on Department of State, Consular Bureau, Washington letterhead concerning the securing of a passport and enclosing letters of introduction to American consular officials in London and Paris, providing a more personal diplomatic element alongside the predominantly commercial material. The archive offers an unusually broad visual survey of 19th-century American consular administration, customs enforcement and overseas commerce. The combination of early material, international origins, maritime and commercial content, official American eagle headings, signatures, seals, ribbons, stamps and manuscript annotations gives the collection considerable appeal for collectors of Americana, diplomatic history, maritime history, postal and revenue history, autographs and historical ephemera.Condition varies as expected for working documents of this age, with folds, toning, staining, edge wear, small tears, separations and occasional losses; numerous seals and official attachments remain present. Overall a remarkably evocative group, worthy of individual examination and offered intact as a historical archive. (PDF for this Lot) (Image)

624 leale imageCapt. John Leale San Francisco Maritime & Political Archive, 1890-1907-Port Warden Campaign, Business Petition & California Commission, Important and unusually cohesive California maritime and political archive relating to Captain John Leale, prominent San Francisco Bay mariner and later Port Warden, documenting his pursuit of public maritime office and extending from 1890 through 1907. The group brings together Leale's own application for appointment, letters of recommendation addressed to California Governor-elect Henry H. Markham, an extensive petition signed by members of San Francisco's commercial community, and a later formal State of California maritime commission. At the heart of the archive is an autograph letter signed by John Leale, San Francisco, December 3, 1890, addressed to Governor-elect Henry H. Markham at Pasadena. Leale formally announces his candidacy, writing that he intends to become an applicant for Port Warden and that he will subsequently submit his endorsements. He signs the letter "John Leale" and identifies himself as captain of the steamer Newark. This letter provides the central context for the remarkable series of recommendations accompanying it.Of particular importance is an extensive multi-page petition from San Francisco businessmen and commercial interests, addressed to Governor-elect Markham and specifically requesting the appointment of "CAPTAIN JOHN LEALE as PORT WARDEN." The petition describes its signatories as residents of San Francisco "identified with its commerce" and commends Leale as a man whose experience rendered him particularly competent for the office and whose personal character was above reproach. The petition carries a substantial assemblage of manuscript signatures and business endorsements extending onto an additional sheet. Visible commercial names include representatives of Gray's Harbor Mill Co., F. Starr & Co., Dodge, Sweeney & Co., Wheaton & Luhrs, Dunham, Carrigan & Hayden Co., and other San Francisco concerns. The sheer number of endorsements provides an unusually tangible picture of the support Leale enjoyed within the city's late-19th-century maritime and commercial community. Also included is a November 21, 1890 letter on ornate Goodall, Perkins & Company letterhead, addressed to Governor-elect Markham and recommending Leale for the Port Warden position. The letterhead itself names Charles Goodall, George C. Perkins and Edwin Goodall, connecting the correspondence with one of the major names in Pacific Coast steamship commerce. The document additionally carries several manuscript endorsements and signatures.Another recommendation, written aboard the S.S. Santa Rosa and dated January 1, 1891, strongly endorses Leale's candidacy. Addressed to Governor-elect Markham, its writer describes Leale as an "old and respected friend" and states that he considered the captain fully competent for the position and believed that, if appointed, Leale would be a credit to himself and the State of California. The verso is contemporaneously docketed "Port Warden / Leale," directly associating the document with the appointment campaign.Together, these 1890-91 documents provide something considerably more interesting than a collection of unrelated autographs: they preserve an organized effort by Leale and members of San Francisco's maritime and business establishment to secure a significant waterfront appointment from California's incoming governor. The historical story continues with an impressive State of California Executive Department commission dated May 6, 1907, issued under Governor James N. Gillett. The large-format engraved document appoints Leale to a California maritime position associated with the Pilot Commissioners, and bears the large gold state seal at lower left. It is signed by Governor J. N. Gillett and countersigned by Secretary of State C. F. Curry. The Pilot Commission was no ceremonial institution. Established by California's first legislature in 1850, it was charged with oversight of pilots serving San Francisco and surrounding waters and today describes itself as California's oldest commission. The archive is particularly significant because surviving San Francisco directories confirm that John Leale subsequently held the office of Port Warden. The 1916 Crocker-Langley directory lists "John Leale" among the city's Port Wardens at 110 Market Street, and he remained listed as a Port Warden in later directories. Thus, the early correspondence preserves documentary evidence of the political and commercial campaign surrounding an appointment that became part of Leale's public maritime career.Taken as a whole, the collection offers a compelling window into San Francisco's waterfront, steamship commerce, political patronage and maritime administration at the turn of the 20th century. It is especially desirable for the direct relationship among the documents: Leale announces his candidacy; prominent commercial figures advocate on his behalf; individual maritime associates supply recommendations; and the archive concludes with an impressive later California state maritime commission. The group contains numerous manuscript signatures and endorsements deserving further individual research, and additional notable San Francisco commercial figures may be represented among the petition's signatories.Documents exhibit expected original folds, toning, scattered foxing, handling, occasional edge wear and other evidence of age and contemporary use. The large California commission retains its impressive gold state seal. Overall a remarkably evocative and historically interconnected group.A significant San Francisco maritime archive worthy of preservation as a single collection.
