1916-1917 Washington-Franklin Issue, flat plate, unwmk, imperf
LotNo. Symbol CatNo. Lot Description
3522 og 485 image1917, 5¢ carmine color error, unwatermarked, imperf. (Scott 485), the single error in a strip of 3, o.g., 2¢ stamps with barest trace of hinges in corners, the error stamp appears to be never hinged, lovely color on fresh paper, wide margins at top and bottom, Extremely Fine, with 1992 P.F. certificate.
Scott $9,000 for single.

According to Martin Armstrong's book, only 48 sheets of #485 were sold to the public over a post office counter; each sheet contains a single error at top and two errors at bottom; 700 sheets were sent to Chicago but all were dutifully returned to Washington; Col. Green purchased 40 of the 48 sheets which were sold when his estate was liquidated.
