3441 O 47X1 imageKnoxville, Tenn., 1861, 5¢ brick red (Scott 47X1), very light pen "X" cancel, full margins all around; tiny thin and small sealed tear not noted on certificate, otherwise Very Fine, very scarce; exactly zero used examples have appeared on Stamp Auction Network since 2018, and none in 2016 and 2017 either. We found only 10 examples that have appeared on the market since 2001, with 9 appearing just the one time and the tenth appearing in 2000 & 2003. If you don't want to wait for a used stamp, you can go for a cover if you want, but Crown records only 23 in his online census (https://www.civilwarphilatelicsociety.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Res-Cen-KNO-TN-A-220406.pdf), and they are more expensive than the used off cover stamps., with 1990 C.S.A. certificate stating "Genuine used Provisional".

3442 O 47X2 imageKnoxville, Tenn., 1861, 5¢ carmine (Scott 47X2), light double circle datestamp, ample to large margins; small corner crease at bottom left and tiny shallow thin speck at top right, Very Fine appearance, extremely rare; Stamp Auction Network has offered only 4 different examples (plus the previous lot as 47X2 despite the cert as 47X1). Of the 4 examples, 2 have pen cancels (both sound) and 2 have handstamp cancels (both faulty). This will be the 5th example offered on SAN. If you don't want to wait for a used stamp, you can go for a cover if you want, but Crown records only 7 in his online census (https://www.civilwarphilatelicsociety.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Res-Cen-KNO-TN-A-220406.pdf), and they are more expensive than the used off cover stamps.

No off cover examples of this variety have appeared on the market since 2014. ex Sharrer & Crocker, signed Bloch, with 1986 P.F. certificate.

3444 O 53X4 imageMacon, Ga., 1861, 5¢ black on yellow (Scott 53X4), light cancel, ample margins with rounded corners, exceptionally fresh, Very Fine and extremely rare, only 3 used off cover examples have appeared on Stamp Auction Network, one of which was sold in 2015 for $2,300 hammer and resold by us in 2018 for $4,500 hammer. The others appeared in 2011 and 2008. This will be the 4th. The Philatelic Foundation has certified a total of 4 off cover examples (3 of which were sold on SAN; the 4th is described as laid paper and appears to be unused (PFC #44378). If you don't want to wait for a used stamp, you can go for a cover if you want, but Crown records only 13 in his online census (https://www.civilwarphilatelicsociety.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/Res-Cen-MAC-GA-A013-v22-220722.pdf), but 3 are dubious, and covers are more expensive than used off cover stamps., with 1972 P.F. certificate and accompanied by Confederate Philately Inc. 3445 O 56XU1 imageMemphis, Tenn., 1861, 5¢ red (Scott 56XU1), 30 x 35mm cut square, light circular datestamp, dark color on bright paper; small faults not visible when in your album, handsome Very Fine appearance, approximately 2 cut squares and 7 used entires have been recorded. See below.
Scott $3,000.

The Memphis Tenn postal stationery provisionals are very interesting. The postmaster knew that Confederate stamps would not be available for months after the US 1857 issues were demonitized. He published a brief announcement in his publication "Memphis Daily Avalanche" on June 8, 1861 literally closing with an invitation to the public to bring their own envelopes to use for the indicia to be printed upon. Any color envelope could be supplied, and Scott lists 4 different shades of envelope -- white, amber, orange and cream. Because the papers were privately supplied and not government issue, the CSA handbook has only 1 listing for all examples, regardless of paper. To that end, Frank Crown's online census on the CWPS website (https://www.civilwarphilatelicsociety.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Res-Cen-MEM-TN-E01-v11-231224.pdf) lists 11 cut squares (1 mint and 10 used) and 32 used postal stationery entires (22 solo) with this indicia but does not attempt to assign Scott classifications. We found and mined online data records and assigned catalog values to 6 of the 10 used cut squares and 28 of the 32 entires -- 56XU1 (1 cut square and 11 entires), 56XU2 (3 cut squares and 7 used entires), 56XU3 (2 cut sauares and 9 used entires) and 56XU4 one unique example, and it was covered by a CSA #11 which paid the postage. This cut square is not listed in the census.

Scott $3,750 as normal.

The C.S.A. handbook lists Scott 61X6 as No. NAS-TN-05, the "TENM" variety as No. NAS-TN-05a and the "white spot" vareity as No. NAS-TN-05b, it does not price either variety. The handbook notes that "the "TENM" variety is found on all examples from one position, and the "white spot" is found on some but not all stamps with the "TENM" variety. Apparently, this variety resulted from damage or deterioration of the plate after printing began." Previous auction descriptions note a comma after "P" in "P.M.", and it is there, but neither Scott nor the C.S.A. handbook discuss this. For a reason unknown to us, Scott does not discuss any varieties on this issue.

3475 cover 10 image1863, 10¢ blue, "frame lines" (Scott 10), pos. 25, Ty. I, full frameline at top and mostly complete at right, barely touched at left, barely visible faults, tied by "Orange, C. H., VA Aug. 1, 1863" circular datestamp on brown cover to Augusta Georgia, otherwise Fine. This was described as a normal #10 in the Wiseman sale and #10c in theh auction where acquired by the consignor. The consignor and we disagree. We do agree that this is an unusual shade. The consignor called it a deep milky blue. Ex Wiseman (June 1971) with his boxed "RWW" handstamp on back. Acquired by the consignor in a 1997 auction.
