H., VA Aug. 1, 1863" circular datestamp on brown cover to Augusta Georgia, otherwise Fine. This was described as a normal #10 in the Wiseman sale and #10c in theh auction where acquired by the consignor. The consignor and we disagree. We do agree that this is an unusual shade. 4255 cover 10 image1863, 10¢ blue, "frame lines" (Scott 10), full frameline at top and partial at bottom, tied by bold partial strike of "Jackson Miss. Jul. 30" circular datestamp on adversity cover made from blue-lined paper to Edward Dean in Spartanburg S.C., most of top backflap missing, still Very Fine. The famous Edward Jefferson Dean (1842-1885) correspondence contains most of the known covers with the rare Spartanburg provisional adhesive with letters written to him by his sister, as well as many exceptional adversity covers. The provisional covers in 1861 identify him as a Corporal in the Spartan Rifles Co K 5th SC Infantry. This 12 month regiment disbanded in April 1862, and Corporal Dean apparently re-enlisted in the Palmetto South Carolina Sharpshooters. By the time of this cover, he was commissioned a Lieutenant in Co C 22nd SC Inf and later promoted Captain of the company. Capt Dean was captured as a POW while leading his company at the Battle of the Crater (7/30/1864) during the Siege of Petersburg and remained in captivity at Fort Delaware until the end of the war.
Scott $3,750.

William R. Weiss noted on page 59 in his Confederate States General Issue Stamps used on Adversity Covers, 1861-1865 (currently available from the CWPS for $6), "Only three adversity uses were available to the author in assembling this collection." Five pages earlier Weiss states that he collected this area for a decade.

Scott $3,750 on full cover.

The 43rd Alabama was assigned to Buckner's Division in late 1863 and Gracie was KIA in December 2, 1864 (https://civilwarintheeast.com/confederate-regiments/alabama/43rd-alabama-infantry/#google_vignette). Therefore, this must be an 1864 use.

4258 cover 10a image1863, 10¢ milky blue, "frame lines" (Scott 10a), large margins incl. all or part of framelines on three sides, gorgeous color tied by perfectly struck "Milledgeville Ga. May 5" circular datestamp on home made cover to "Acworth, W & A (Western & Atlantic) R.Road Georgia", Very Fine stamp and cover to a station on the Western & Atlantic Railroad, frameline stamps in the milky blue shade are extremely rare and always achieve higher prices than the normal #10 on cover., with 1979 P.F. certificate.

A railroad station was built there in the 1840s and was destroyed by Union forces on Nov. 13, 1864. Thus, this cover must be either 1863, in which case it would be a very early use as the stamp is believed to have been issued in April 1863) or 1864.

William Henry Gist was born in Charleston and served in both the South Carolina House of Representatives and the South Carolina Senate from 1844 to 1856. Although elected Lieutenant Governor by the state legislature in 1848, he failed to qualify and therefore remained in the Senate. A strong supporter of secession, he was elected as governor in 1858 andwrote to all cotton states except Texas to inform them of the likelihood of South Carolina's withdrawal from the Union and to request their cooperation. He also kept the state legislature in special session to await the outcome of the 1860 presidential election, proposing that a convention be called and the militia strengthened in the event of Abraham Lincoln's election. Gist left office on December 17, 1860, the day that the Secession Convention convened, and signed the Ordinance of Secession as a convention member.
