Lovell was blamed for the fall of Confederate New Orleans in 1862 and he was later relieved of command. "Confederate House" was built in 1861 by "Major" R.O. Edwards, but was destroyed during the Civil War in 1863. Major Edwards built a new hotel on the site, the Edwards House, which opened in 1867. This structure was replaced in 1923 by the present building, which after many renovations, etc. is now the Hilton Garden Inn-Jackson Downtown.
