2248 101E var. image1918 (May 15), First Trip, New York Admission Ticket (AAMC 101E var.), postcard-size ticket inscribed "Initial Flight, Airplane Mail Service, New York---Philadelphia---Washington" at "Belmont Park, Wednesday, May 15th, 1918, 11.30 A.M."; the card is serially numbered "241" and is signed by Postmaster General, Albert A. Burleson and by Aviation writer and Aero Club organizer, Henry Woodhouse; bent upper left corner, otherwise Very Fine. A similar card is illustrated in the A.A.M.C, Volume 3, 7th Ed., pp. 496.


The card also bears a rubberstamped signatureof Army Major R.H. Fleet, the man given the responsibility of assembling the six pilots and six planes for the Post Office, a task that he would miraculously accomplish in just eight days, despite the fact that there were no experienced pilots and no planes with the necessary fuel capacity or cargo space. It was then canceled with a normal Dec 5 Washington duplex and sent to Eugene Klein in Philadelphia, where it was backstamped the same day. Included is the original mimeographed descriptive letter. This cover is number "#134" of the 134 mailed, Very Fine. Most covers were franked with ordinary stamps. Those franked with C1-3 command a premium.
