1066 cover L 3 (LZ 24) image1915 WWI Marine Luftschiffe Zeppelin (Sieger L 3 (LZ 24)), stampless picture postcard with magenta "Censureret" handstamp at top right, and "Odense 5.2.16." circular datestamps and wavy lines cancel, sent by a captured crew member to a young lady in Germany, picture side shows a well-dressed boy, Very Fine.

The L 3 was commissioned on May 11, 1914 just before the outbreak of WWI. With Kapt. Hans Fritz commanding, the L 3 became the first Zeppelin over England when on January 19, 1915, she was ordered to bomb the British Naval base at Great Yarmouth. But rain and lack of power from the ship resulted in the ship dropping six 110-pound explosives and seven incendiaries more or less at random while crossing the town of Yarmouth. On the morning of Feb. 17, 1914, while scouting for enemy ships over the Danish coast, the L 3 radioed "engine trouble" adn after a second engine failure, Capt. Fritz landed his zeppelin on the Danish Island of Fano without injury to anyone onboard. Fritz destroyed his confidential documents and set fire to his airship, but he and his 15 crew members were interned for the rest of the war. This card was written by L 3 crew member W. Krause while interned in a Danish Kaserne (barracks) on Feb. 4, 1916 and was posted in Odense the next day. The reverse seems to carry messages from other interns in the Danish "Kaserne".

AAMC Z-461a.

According to Wikipedia, the R-34 left Britain on July 2, 1919 and arrived in Mineola, Long Island four days later after a flight of 108 hours with virtually no fuel left…. This was the first East-West crossing of the Atlantic and was done two weeks after the first non-stop Atlantic crossing by Alcock & Brown. The return journey to Pulham in Norfolk was from 10 to 13 July and took 75 hours." On January 27, 1921 (about 19 months later), the R-34 (to make a long story short) ran into some bad weather, and ended up being heavily damaged and scrapped.
