Beginning in the summer of 1861, stamps of the 1851-60 Issues were no longer valid for postage. Stanley Ashbrook—in a letter accompanying this cover—believed this to be the reason for the 10¢ due, though he admits the possibility that it was simply an overweight letter. (Image) (Image2) (Image3)
