391 O 30 image1861, 5¢ orange brown, type II (Scott 30), rich color, light grid cancel, Fine, The 5c type II stamps in orange brown began appearing in early May 1861, just as the Civil War broke out. A few weeks later, in June 1861, U.S. postmaster-general Montgomery Blair ordered the severance of postal ties and the production of new stamps. The new 1c and 3c stamps began appearing in mid-August 1861 and the old stamps were demonitized six days later, and the new 5c issue first appeared on Jan. 2, 1862. Thus, given the very short period of time they were valid for postage, the 5c orange brown is very scarce in used condition., with 1981 P.F. certificate.
